I need to hook up 2 machines for a house that doesn't have CAT 5 or unable to drill holes. I believe the phone line is shared so I was thinking of those phone network @ 1mbps.

I like to order for 2 machines where eventually, when the area gets DSL, you can share the DSL through those phone network or wireless. I'm kinda broke so I like to pay as less as possible.

This is a gift. I saw intel's, was thinking of PCI cards but USB would chew too much power.

Any idea. I don't like to drill holes in a new house.

And yeah, it wasn't cat 5 prewired..

Going with Phone Networking isn't a bad idea. When you say broke I assume you have no money at all, which can impose quite a problem. Linksys provides 2 versions of PNA standard cards a 1mbs and 10mbs. It also offers a network starter kit using 2 pci phone networking cards that hook up to your phone line and all the software to share an internet connection. The 1mbs starter kit will run you about $54 I think and the 10mbs will run about $111. Go to linksys's website and get the product name it's something like Home Phone networking or something like that. Look it up on price watch and see how low you can go. Also netgear and DLink also offer similar products around the same price. I think anandtech has a review on one of them in review section under networking.

Cat5 is definitely cheaper than wireless. Not to mention the best way for dependability and versatility. I would suggest moving your computers all to one area in your house or maybe not drilling, but running the cable under your carpet in the corners or doing something like that. I have a setup like that in my apartment. Trust me...you can get Cat5 cable at $65 for a 1000ft box and RJ45 connectors for real cheap then all you need is a set of crimpers....that would get you enough cable to network whatever and by the time you buy network cards for your systems, you'd have a lot less invested than any wireless system and you'd also have a more dependable system...As far as the phone route...I've heard it's ok, but you wouldn't be able to harness the power of DSL the same way you could with a real ethernet LAN. So weigh your options and look into ethernet. It's really the best route to go if you can do it.

Yhea, I agree... try to run the CAT5 cable along the wall or under carpet. More work... but worth it. You can get 10/100 ethernet cards for under 10 bucks a piece... and just use a cross-over cable. Can do it for less than $100 and it is fast and dependable.

No wires.. boss is a millionare, doesn't want wires cuz dog chews alot, i mean my foot too. having wires will only cause my headache. Only reason I think of wireless is you can move it room to room with notebooks and they don't have to rewire everytime they "remodel" their 3 acre mansion.

Broke as in I'm cheap but not that cheap.. this is the big guys bday gift

Forget nic,
I got cases of those 10/100 intel managements..

i'm the guy thats giving it away
