My wife and I receive pictures/movies that are captured by our children of activities of grandchildren.

While I know that I can on my Android, dump them to my SD card or email, store on laptop and from there, play on the TV,

Is there a way to go from either phone straight to the TV to play the videos/stills.

Similar to like on a laptop, you can setup a second monitor

Allcast + Chromecast.
Some android phones can cast their screen directly to the chromecast without using allcast.

Chromecast. BubbleUPnP also works if you have a smart TV that's a DLNA renderer.

TVs that I would like to connect/display on are not "smart. They have the multiple type inputs (AVI, USB, HDMI, Cable), but no wireless capability.

Chrome cast (via Wiki) looks like a smart "dongle".

I did not notice (quickly) how the phone app gets the data to the Chromcast except by WiFi.

does the Chromcast have it's own built in "router" or would I have to configure it based off an existing wireless system in the house or hotel?

For iPhone you can airplay to an Apple TV. Chromecast is the streamer of choice for Android.

You would have to set up the Chromecast to join your existing wireless system. It is pretty straightforward and can be done from your phone or pc I think.
