heh.. I bought a prepaid sim card for $20, which had unlimited taiwan, and 1-hour to select countries. Arg, I forgot the company. I just found some random store and bought it.

It was rechargeable from online too.

What did you say about a 38 point lead with 9 mins left in 4th? ;-)

:p, man, I was a Laker fan before I was even born (VERY true story). Game 4's loss disturbed me to the core. Also, I'm back on land, and watched it in the hotel room, so it was the first playoff game I saw since Game 1 of this series. Lakers lost that game, so I left to work at sea in a foul mood already :(.

grrrrrr...

Have fun in Taiwan! I'll be there in 2 weeks for more work (Kee-Lung, then to Okinawa). Hopefully I can still catch NBA games there. T.T

if skype works, than magic jack will probably work. magic jack is unlimited for $20.00 / year. so it really depends on how much you use the phone doesn't it.

I peronally just bought a Embedded Skype phone (no PC necessary). And subscribed to a 9.99 unlimited world-wide calling plan from Skype. Assuming if you don't call mobile numberes in taiwan too much, its very cheap.

magicjack seems ok, I'm not a fan of having a computer on all the time just so I can make a phone call though. Whatever savings you may have had goes out the door when you have to accompany having a PC on 24/7 along with it.

Considering 99% of AT probably has at least one computer on 24/7, it wouldn't be an issue for most of us. :p

Try Onesuite long distance services.

They got online prepaid phone cards that you can use in Taiwan with a dozen access numbers. You can also use it as a voip (PC to Landline) to call someone in the US or anywhere in the world for that matter. Rate is 5.9 cents per minute Taiwan to US, US to Taiwan is 3 cents.

i use skype online VOIP (PC to landline) as well. It costs 2c/minute, so after calling about twice weekly to relatives in Taiwan from NY, its been about 6 months and I've only used less than half of my $10 credit.

this is what advice I usually here from the experts on this subject. do a search for a vendor in the area you are going to and buy there or buy before and have it shipped.
