Here's one...

Wife calls:
I'm on my way to take the baby to the hospital...

Can someone please find my heart? I think it just fell into the basement somewhere.

Apparently he fell and hit his head, cutting it somewhere and thus likely requiring stitches. Of course, me being of slightly above-average intelligence is thinking "oh yay... they're going to want to do MRI's and all that fun stuff too", all while knowing that there could be far more at risk here than just a few stitches.

The kicker... my wife has the car, so I'm stuck at work with nothing but a telephone to stare at for the next I-don't-know-how-long-until-I-get-an-update.

I'm beginning to see why alcoholism is popular.

Edit: Update

Got more details, he's waiting to get either stitches or "glue" for what my wife describes as a 'small' 1/2" gash on his forehead. The triage nurse agreed that some sort of treatment will be required for the wound because it is fairly deep and would just pop open if left to heal on its own. They did not feel that any sort of additional measures be taken.

My wife says he stumbled and fell hitting his head on the corner of a display case (museum) on the way down. So it wasn't really heavy impact that caused it, it was the corner of a glass display case on the way down. He is said to be otherwise happy and functioning normal (whatever that means given how weird my family is).

Thanks ViRGE, didn't know you guys could do that.

Edit 2: Pic!
Lido-what? I better get something good for all this...

$100 ER co-pay, that's what you get kid.

I'd be looking for someone to give me a ride to the hospital.

Time warped post that ended up taking the OP. Moved so that SunnyD can update the OP.

This reminds me, I need to do my monthly guilt call to my mom to remind her of all the scars I see in the mirror from my childhood.

I have a scar that runs part of my cheek from a scratch from a kid at daycare/preschool. I have patches on my chin where no beard grows (and it's obvious since I have dark stubble) from when I dumped a fresh cup of coffee on my face and got severe burns (and people talk about McDonald's coffee being superheated as if coffee from a drip maker is any better). I have a few scars that run the length of my thumb that was split open when it was caught between the pedestal and bowl of a concrete birdbath. And I am missing a quarter of my front tooth when a kid kicked me into a TV set.

I think that's it for now.

I'm... um... well I'll survive. This is the same baby who has rolled off our bed onto the floor a half dozen times, among other things. I have full confidence that he's fine, and will one day play in the NFL. He's an amazingly durable child, as he proves time and again. Still, it's a crappy feeling. I just know the hospital is going to make much more of this as a "head injury", especially being a 14 month old.

Anyhow, we're 4 for 4 - all of my kids have been in the hospital as youngsters for one thing or another now. (Oldest son swallowed a quarter, which got stuck halfway down when he was about 4, older daughter had an MRI on her spine when she was about 1, younger daughter was in for a couple days with dehydration from some virus when she was about 2.)

"they found a dead hooker in your basement" would rank up there too.

I'm sure your kid will be fine.

Kids are ridiculously resilient as you pointed out ... head injuries can be scary, but hopefully it just looks scary. Good luck!

I'd update the OP, but it's pointless as it's been timewarped.

I freaked when my then-7mo fell off the bed onto the carpet (2-mattresses high)... he cried so badly. He is able to sit up now at 11mo. and will still sometimes fall backwards hitting his head on the carpet or those play mats, and they still cry... these kids go through a lot of head injuries... it's amazing not much comes of it. I would still get your kid checked out - full workup - because of the severity there... that actress who died on the ski slopes after being "fine" for hours should've opened a lot of people's eyes.

Glue? Hmh. When I was in the military the Corpsman would put "super glue" on small cuts to seal them and stop bleeding. :Q It seemed to work too.

Just wait till yours learns to walk... then run. My son stays up fighting sleep till he's delirious... then he'll run through the living room laughing, trip over his own feet face first into the carpet spread-eagle... look up and giggle. Then proceed to do it all over again.

The good thing about "glue" imho is that with the right stuff in this case, not only can you close the wound but you can also treat the patient for pain at the same time. "Here, inhale."

I don't like to laugh at others' misfortune (unless absolutely necessary :D) but that just sounds funny.
