especially since a lot of my relatives (including my grandparents) live halfway around the world in India. It always makes me think that bad news is on the way, especially since my grandparents are old and well ... yeah.

We got a phone call about 5 minutes ago (2:25AM) and it turns out it was just the hospital exchange calling for my mom, since she's the on call doctor. I seriously froze when I heard the phone, though.

Am I paranoid for being scared of phone calls in the middle of the night?

Well, you said they are on the other side of the world. So If they call in their daytime I suppose you'll get them at night. But really, why worry now and die a thousand deaths over a situation in life that will happen at sometime anyway. Face it when you know it's bad news. Try not to scare yourself before you even answer the phone.

Well, it's 2:30AM here, so it would be around 3PM there ...

DAMN IT, THE PHONE JUST RANG AGAIN!

Anyways ...

I really do try not to ... I found out a week or two ago that one of my grandmothers is ill. Not gravely ill, but ill to the point where she moved 700 miles to the city where her daughters (my aunts) live.

I always put my phone on silent unless I know a good friend might need to call for something important.

Amol, if your phone rings in the middle of the night, and its the middle of the day over there, have no worries. It's when your phone rings in the middle of the day when its the middle of the night over there you should worry.

I think its worse expecting a call and then never receiving it.

I know it can be dumb to think this way but I can't help but wonder if something happened to that person and will usually end up waking in the middle of the night and checking my phone for missed calls a couple of times as a result.

The last time I got a phone call in the middle of the night, I heard,

"This is the Canadian Forces automated recall system. Please report to your unit immediately. To confirm you have recieved this recall order, please enter your service number on the keypad."

turns out some asstool in Ottawa set it off by accident...but it was scary.

I also have that fear. If the phone rings in the wee hours my first thought is, "oh god, who died?"
