Phoenix/Firebird/Mozilla stalls on Anandtech?

sygyzy

Lifer
I run Firebird and I was curious if anyone has seen this problem? It only started within the last week or so. It is probably a combination of the new ads and the browser.

Basiscally anytime I click anything on the forums that requires loading a page, it loads the page then sort of freezes the browser while it says "Waiting for Anandtech" then after about 3 seconds it resumes.

It's not my connection as IE loads fine. Also other boards are fine in Firebird as well.

Any ideas?

I'm using Phoenix/Firebird and Anandtech loads fine. In fact, I never had any problems with it. Which build are you using? Did you manually turn on any settings in the config? about:config maybe?

Using 0.6 and I didn't turn on any settings. It seems to have gotten better after reloading the browser. Maybe a bug? i.e. leaving it open for prolonged periods or too many tabs?

Thanks for the reply. I'll leave the thread in case anyone notices this.

no problems with mine and ive been using it for 4-5 mnths now.. and version 0.6? hmm must look into this... thank you for proloning my distraction form my paper

EDIT: I cant seem to find 0.6... sure its not 0.5?

Spyro - Good question but not relevant. Even when loading topics with 1 reply it acts this way. But luckily I haven't seen it happening as much. I bet it's something that happens over time (sessions that are days long).

Glitchny - Positive it's 0.6

I have the followings in my user.js and it appears to make the browser a little quicker (got it from Mozillazine.org)

user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 0);
user_pref("network.http.pipelining", true);
user_pref("network.http.proxy.pipelining", true);
user_pref("network.http.pipelining.maxrequests", 100);

Also, try deleting XUL.mfl in the .slt folder.

Well, when I click on a thread, there's a little "Waiting for...." pause but it only pauses for about a second. It's just the browser waiting for the server to respond. MSIE does the same thing.

I realize that. Run a Phoenix browser for over 10 hours with at least 10 tabs of various sites. The pause should be very noticeable. I'll call it a stall/freeze to emphasize that it's not a normal "pause"

Where exactly are you finding these files? I don't have either.

Woah, you sure you want to turn on Pipelining? It's still experimental.

I think we have to create the user.js file ourselves rite?

Pipelining is experimental and not all servers support it properly, so you will get rendering errors sometimes. IMHO its not worth the hassle right now. Anyway you can also edit the files within about:config if you don't wanna mess with your user.js or prefs.js file.

As for AT, it works fine for me with the latest win32 nightlies. 0.6 is not yet released even though the UA string since the lates April builds have it marked as 0.6. It should be out really soon though.

Yeah I figured the about:config trick. Very cool. I'll turn off pipelining if there are problems. So far the settings haven't helped the stalls. I'll keep investigating.

I've had that stall freeze problem after using Tabbed Browsing Extensions for a while. Are you using that? Is so, try disabling it temporarily.
Another thing to try is switching to another skin and restarting. I would try both and see if it fixes it.

I cruise with like 20+ tabs open and it doesn't slow down. Never had a problem with AT either.

How much ram do you have? Are you running other programs at the same time? On my 850tbird w/ 512mb ram, I can browse with 15+tabs, for hours upon hours open. I have left the system locked but fully powered on for 3 days with 20+tabs and there was no delay. On my 250 K6-2 laptop though, with 2+ tabs open there is the "stall" you speak of. It could be purely a lack of system resources.

512MB of ram and I am always running other stuff like Outlook, AIM, IE, FTP Server, Newsgroup Reader, etc.

Have you upgraded since the last reply? 😀

The problem is almost non-existent in firebird .6, and if you check my sig you'll see that my system is...... Not as good as yours 🙂
