OK, some recent Pho threads from the Vietnamese/Asians/Asian food fans on this forum have inspired me to try it, and tonight I'm going to a friend's house who lives down the street from a pho restaurant (Pho Hoa.)

What tips do you have fo a pho beginner? What style should I order? Will I need breathmints after? What will it do to my digestive system (I.B.S.-like consequences?) Also, I just worked out...is it fattening or full of msg and does it have lots of protein?

Dude... you'll need to put those red chilli paste in there, also the brown paste, mix it up with a decent amount of lemon squeeze. If you're a fan of herbs and spices, than mix them in accordingly as well. You might want to shred them up just a bit, I'm not a big fan of beens sprout so I never put them in.

Order beef noodle + meatballs+ large bowl =

Damn... all this makes me want to grab a bowl myself. :D

It's balanced on protein and carbs. Pho is usually heavy with both rice noodles and meaty goodness. Though if you have any problems with cilantro, mint or basil you may have issues. (The soup doesn't have mint or basil in it, more like a cousin of both)

As far as what to order it depends on what meats you'll eat. The full-on Deluxe Pho has Brisket, Flank, Tendon, Tripe and Beef Balls. Most people like Beef Balls, Brisket and Flank, but Tendon and Tripe tends to throw people. Tendon is mostly cartilage, but in Pho it's been cooked long enough that it's not particularly chewy. (Damn good actually) Tripe is, well, small intestine, and most people don't like the thought of eating it. If you don't like either of those you can usually find one without them.

Oh yeah, if it comes up get the beef Pho, though "Pho" implies it's made with beef normally. You may also find that dipping the meat in some of the Hoisin/Plum Sauce makes it extra-tasty. I know I find that's true.

I'd say for your first experience with pho just stick the flank and/or brisket pho, i prefer well done vs rare. when you get brave try it with tendon, tripe, or extra blood juice.

Greens, dark (Viet.) chicken, and hot sauce. Mmmmm.
If you like gizzards, add that too.

Noodle soup is not bad, but some if the stuff they cook - smells like week old socks.
I just can't stand it.

Since you are new, tell the waitress that you need a few moments to look at the menu. Order a small bowl and see if you like it. I agree with the posters about pho needs to eat hot, the hotter the better. Bon appetite :D

Edit: Now I want a LARGE bowl of pho very bad, but I live so far away (about 3 hrs). I will have pho soon.
