Philips Electronics NV, the Dutch giant which helped pioneer the compact disc in the 1980s, aims to breathe new life into its sagging consumer electronics division with the launch this weekend of a digital videodisc recorder.
Europe's first DVD recorder from Philips
The gizmo, which can be used to record television programs and home movies onto DVDs, will go on sale in Europe on Saturday, following its launch Friday at a big trade fair in Berlin. The device hits stores in the U.S. on Oct. 1, where it will compete with a recorder launched last year by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. of Japan.
