Note 1: Let's be clear here. That "open slot" means that if you open
the case (and void your warranty) you will find a place where you
can mount (with an aftermarket mount kit or else with clever use of
your own stuff) a hard drive. And you also need to hack the hard
drive using some third party (but free) software. This isn't hard, but
it isn't for the buy-set-forget crowd.

Note 2: You need to spend another $250 on top of whatever you pay for
a Tivo unit to get a working Tivo unit. $250 buys you lifetime service.
So the real price here is $349.

Just FYI.

or, it is $99 + ($9.99 X #months you want service), so if you don't plan on using it for 24 months, the lifetime subscription isn't worth it, go monthly. The series2 units are coming out now, so you very well might not want to keep the old stuff for a long time. Just a little food for though, don't get the lifetime if you don't plan on keeping the machine for "life." The lifetime service is only for the lifetime of the unit, it is non-transferable, so if you get it on one unit, and then get a new unit, you gotta pay for service all over again. Just a little FYI.

Unfortunately, none of these are at my Wally-World...

Lifetime IS transferrable with the unit, though. So if you purchase
lifetime, then upgrade and want to sell the unit, the lifetime
contract goes with the unit you are selling...

I think he means its not transferrable BETWEEN units..so if you buy a new TIVO, which has 2 tuners btw, you would have to pay another $250 for the sub and could not transfer fro the old unit.

For those who dont know, the modems are very flaky on these things so you should protect them at all costs ie UPS or one of those wireless phone jack devices. I know multiple people who have fried TIVO modems and had to hack them with ethernet card addon to make them useable again.

Aww crap!!! Thanks for asking this. I've been planning on getting rid of my home phone service, but won't be able to quite yet. That completely slipped my mind!

There is a tivonet option, which a lot of people use. It allows you to d/l from your internet connection. You can get more info from www.avsforum.com

BTW. got 1 of these for $60 at my Wallyworld 6 months ago.
