I have a Philips DVP642 DVD player. It says it can do PAL-to-NTSC format conversion--great for viewing non-region-encoded European discs.

I want to buy a DVD with these details:

Release date: 23rd April 2007
Format: PAL
Language English
Region: 2
[UK, Europe, Japan, South Africa and Middle East]

I assume since it mentions region 2 that it is region encoded and won't work on my DVD player even though its in PAL format and my DVD player can convert it?

I also have ANYDVD and it says it removes the region code. Does that mean I could play the movie on my PC's DVD player or would that have to be able to play the PAL format also?

Take the good advice of the previous posters. The videohelp instructions will allow your dvd player to play all regions. I did something similar to my Philips 5960 (?) and it worked like a charm.

I'll PM you my paypal address so you can send me said money :p
The DVD is The Hogfather. It's a live action mini-series based on Terry Pratchett's book by the same name.

this is my 1st non-region 1 dvd and i don't know of anyone who has a non-region 1 dvd to test. the dvd is like $36 shipped from the UK. i didn't want to spend that much and get something i couldn't use.

Most Philips DVD decks are Uber hackable. I have an old 711 unit that I can hack into around 5 different manufacturers including Loewe, Marrantz, etc!

Yeah, I would imagine your TV is the weak link when playing PAL. Most TVs made in the last 5 years or so can display all formats though (NTSC/PAL/PAL60, etc)
