I bought a Philips DVP5982/37 DVD Player to replace a Philips DVP-642 DVD Player in my home entertainment system today?

The Phillips DVP-642 DVD Player was previously connected to my TV via component video cables and to my old Panasonic SC-HT290 Receiver via one of those thin optical cables?

Today I plugged in the Philips DVP5982/37 DVD Player to my television via HDMI and then to the same receiver with a digital coax cable. I then went into the receiver and changed the DVD sound input from optical to the digital coax connector. I then went into the DVD menu and turned off HDMI for sound per Philips's website.

Results:

1. The DVD picture is great and the sound comes out great through the television.
2. There is still no sound coming out of the receiver/speakers.

There are very few options I can change in the DVP5982/37?s audio menu and I went through the trouble shooting suggestions in the manual for the receiver.

I am running the DVD player over to a buddies house tomorrow and am going to connect to his receiver tomorrow (he has a Philips DVP5960 connected to his receiver via digital coax), just to rule out a faulty DVD Player. My buddy says that the old receiver may simply not be able to handle the signal from the DVD player.

Any suggestions? And yes, I know I need a new receiver. :)

Nothing wrong with the DVD player. It will output the digital audio signal either via HDMI or the digital coax but not both at the same time. I have one that I bought for my parents and ran into this very issue. Why they did this is beyond me. I found the info below on another board but need more info than this before tearing stuff out of the box.

Hi,

You can remove 1 of the transistor labelled "Q10" on the mono board which is located beside the HDMI connector. By removing Q10, it will allow you to enjoy both HDMI & coaxial audio at the same time.

Thank you.

Cheer!

rushhound1 is correct about being able to output HDMI or the digital coax, not both. I have the same player and was reading on it over at avsforum and saw mention of that. hopefully philips will come out with a firmware to fix this "issue".

Here's the thread btw. Text

I'd be interested in more info on this transistor removal method also.

Thanks for the link (good read). If you are using HDMI and digital coax out, then do NOT install the new firmware released on 06-21-07. They sorta fixed the problem, but on bootup with the new firmware, the player defaults back to HDMI audio. Grr.

My problem with audio was fixed with a new receiver. The digital coax on my old receiver had died.
