Just wondering if anyone has any experience in this regard- I have a Philips DVD player with USB port that plays mpeg-4 video, so I was able to format a 40gb usb laptop drive with fat32 and watch videos off the hard drive on the t.v.

The 40 gig is already full with a few seasons of tv shows so I'd like to upgrade to a big drive, preferably 1tb. Just wondering if anyone knows if there is any limitations that would cause a 1tb drive formatted as fat32 to not work or be recognized?

It should work, but has the normal FAT32 limitations of course.
There should be firmware fixes to support long filenames as well if you care to look into it.

Thanks for the advice! The philips website says that the max filename
length is 8 characters and don't seem to be any sign of firmware updates. I hope I'm wrong on this one.

There is some modified firmware floating around for the philips players that lets you see more characters, forget how many it is though.
I have the same player and just use it mainly with usb sticks, I just name things like episodes of tv series, one two three four, when I go to put them on the stick :)

Yeah I do the same thing... but it would be nice to not have to rename all those files! I'll have to look for those firmwares. Thanks very much for the info.
