i want to buy this but one question?? my LCD TV only has DVI will this play DVD's at 720p using a HDMI to DVI cable??

There seems to be some controversy on this one. People at F@twallet are reporting that this player doesn't want to upconvert to anything above 480p when using HDMI to DVI. I have this unit ($49.99 + tax with free shipping directly from Philips) but have not tried it yet as I don't have my cable. My Hitachi TV has DVI only, no HDMI.

I ran into the same problem with my TV and this player. So instead of a gift for me, it'll be for someone else. It respects the aspect ratio flag for divx/xvid, which is a major step up from the 642.

guys this unit is simply awsome, i pop in a memory stick and i watch dvix mpg u name it, plus overall design is awsome! Thanks OP

Did CC take the rebate down? I can't seem to find it anymore and the price seems to be at $69.99 without a rebate.

Just received my cable kit. Hooked up with HDMI cable and used DVI dual link adaptor on one end to connect to my Hitachi TV. HDMI worked fine and menu is not grayed out!

🙂

So does it upconvert over HDMI or not?

Yes. Mine does. At least from HDMI to DVI on my Hitachi TV.

hmm...A lot of people can't get HDMI->DVI upconverting to work, including myself. I'm locked at 480p.

I've got 480p, 720p and 1080i. No 576p (whatever that is).

Question..are you using a one piece HDMI to DVI cable or are you using an HDMI to HDMI cable with a dual link DVI adaptor on the end? I'm using HDMI to HDMI cable with DVI (dual link) adaptor attached. Cables were kitted from Cables to Go (full set from Buy.com for $12.xx after $20 rebate and $20 Google Checkout - received today - and rather nice set of cables for the price, I might add 😉 )

This player, coupled with a pentax A10 (divx movie mode), will play movies directly from the usb port or burnt files disk. Very easy, with no transcoding. While this setup may not be for the aspiring producer, it should serve well for home movies in a very small package.
I'll be picking up the pentax today, anyone wanting a sample in low light conditions, dude abides.

the philips is a nice player to .

Was that in store only? The panny is the player I really want.

BTW, for those of you that it doesn't upconvert for (using DVI), try buring the movie using DVD decryptor then try it again. I've read that's what you have to do for a lot of upconverting players when not using HDMI.

Is there a firmware upgrade or something?...

Anyone know why the dvd player turns off when you pause it...I mean you pause it and come back the next day and the dvd player is turned off...I mean the last 5 dvd players I have had paused, and stayed paused...

I have turned "sleep" off in the dvd settings...but that didnt help any.

It was a one piece cable. Unfortunately I already wrapped it up and gave it to the person I decided to give it to.
