I bought one of these cheap cd burners last year b/c there was a pretty good deal. I've had no problems with it until this week when the thing decided not to eject. When I hit the eject button, the light turns on, and I hear a whirring sound. But the tray fails to come out. I'm pretty sure it's a hardwar problem. Maybe there is something jammed in there or the ejecting mechanism is broken?

Anyways, the drive is sitting on the floor now. I managed to get the faceplate off but it looks like I'll need some special screws to take it apart. And the customer support people actually want me to pay them to help me troubleshoot this over the phone. The drive isn't worth the fee.

Any ideas before it goes in the trash and I start shopping around for a new one?

try folding out a paper clip and putting it in the little hole to manually eject. It should at least help get your disc back if you have one in. It it has opening problems sounds like it's time for a new drive.
