I am surprised there is not a thread on this recent development.

During a recent interview Phil Robertson was asked a question.

He gave an answer.

Various gay rights groups did not like his answer.

A&E suspended Phil from the Dusk Dynasty show.

“Duck Dynasty” patriarch Phil Robertson is off the hit A&E reality series indefinitely after disparaging gays as sinners akin to adulterers and swindlers, the network said.

Why is it that non-gays have an anti-gay opinion they are punished.

If I say I do not like democrats, nobody cares.

If I say I do not like socialist, nobody cares.

If I say I do not like liberals, nobody cares.

If I say I do not like gays, people start calling me a bigot and other names.

Why is that?

And I agree with Phil, why would a man find another mans anus more attractive than a woman?

The bigger question is why did this redneck think he could bash gays and stay on TV? Is he really that dull? He has the freedom to bash gays if he wants, he does not have the freedom to expect a bully pulpit on TV to do it. He just murdered his own cash cash. ROFLMFAO

He's free to have an opinion and others are free to have an opinion on that.
What's the problem?

Its funny people hit on the gay part of what he said but skipped over the part where blacks were more happy before the civil rights as they never said anything bad against white people while working the fields. :)

Meh, who fucking cares. Is anyone really that surprised? TV is such a cluster fuck now anyways, I can't believe people even waste time watching this crap.

Nobody says the guy can't have an opinion. In this case his expressing his opinion conflicted with the image his employer was trying to project so they effectively suspended him.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences not sure why this is such a hard concept for the OP to grasp.

Totally agree.

However, we seem to now have a "protected class" of people with immunity from ridicule.

No one has the right to NOT be offended.

It's obvious you've never watched the show as it's quite hilarious.

I spent about 10 minutes on it while at a friends house. more than enough for me. Lets me appreciate why I have basic cable and save at least $70 each month.

So let me get this straight. A&E has a show about rednecks and an old redneck says something this is 100% in line with what people think rednecks are like and this is "in conflict with the image his employer was trying to project".

Seems a bit like having a reality show about "porn stars" and then complaining when they release a sex tape.

I don't disagree.

This guy likely doesn't care either. He had money before the show, will have money after the show. He's only doing the show for the money.

If he does care about being on the show, I guess it's a learning lesson and he'll tread more lightly during future interviews

Except the issue is that religion is also a "protected class". And yet here we have a person being suspended from a show for voicing his religious views.

I thought businesses weren't allowed to discriminate on the basis of a protected class?

Lets put it this way. Imagine A&E and had a reality show about gay people.

Now imagine that one of the stars of the show got gay married and a right-wing Christian group complained.

Could A&E then suspend the gay star for having gotten gay married?

You have a jacked up way of looking at stuff, but the more I think about it, the more this makes sense.

Do we have a case of the "rights to not being offended" of the few, trumping the "rights to offend" of the many?

Why is that?
quote-thinking2.jpg

Among the many appalling traits of the modern Left — and they are legion — their fatuous air of unearned moral superiority has got to be among the most annoying. Sheltered, protected, coddled from birth, shepherded through a credentialing system along with thousands, perhaps millions, of like-minded clones, they are the children of the bubble, swathed in their footie pajamas, cuddling their cups of hot chocolate, and dreaming of that well remunerated regulatory job in the imperial capital that surely awaits them.

Some old guy with a beard from Louisiana had a Politically Incorrect thought?

The Horror!

Did the gay star have derogatory things to say for an interview for a highly publicized magazine?

uno,

"When all think alike, the no one is thinking".
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Exactly! This explains why redneck fundamentalist Christians are perceived as dull.

Yet these Duck Dynasty rednecks have made more money than you ever will in your lifetime and continue to rake it hand over fist. Sounds like your life is the one that's dull.

Yep, city folks and progressives like to get their laughs and vindicate their sense of superiority watching rednecks saying stupid things. Until they say something you don't like, then you bring out the moral judgement tribunal.

Personally I think this dude just proved himself to be an idiot, but then again I don't get my jollies by vicariously sneering at some hicks on TV. I guess the "poke fun of the rednecks" game is over.

Derogatory is a matter of opinion.

Phil Robertson committed a public action, that was part of him being part of a protected class, that pissed off a gay rights organization.

If a gay reality star committed a public action, that was part of him being part of a protected class(ie got same-sex married), and that pissed off a defense of married organization how is that any different?
