So here is my personal story.. hope its enough.. please critque it.. if there are errors who cares I cant do much anycase.
-----------------------------------------
A Personal Story:
India is a land of mystic, mystery and supernatural beauty. It was here that I was born and brought up, within the confines of the Indian Institute of Technology ? Madras (IIT-M). IIT Madras as its popularly known is located in the center of a large reserve forest, a forest that houses several species of deer, snakes and crocodiles and as well as a large collection of unique flora and fauna that are specific to that region of India. It was here that my interest in Environmental Sciences first took shape. Throughout my school life from K through 12, I was surrounded by the warm sounds of birds chirping in the trees and deer grazing in the lush greenery. My admiration to these surroundings is what that drew me to a field that would bring me a life long satisfaction and worldly improvement to this planet.
In 1997 I left India searching for greener pastures. Arriving in Los Angeles one could see the stark contrast between my previous home and my new one. Concrete pillars of this urban forest had replaced my much loved tree trunks. I could no longer jump around looking for the next branch to settle on, I was like a fish out of water. Weeks since my arrival I had made a trip to Central California where I promptly bonded with nature once again. It was here that I realized what my ultimate goal in life should be and hence started a pursuit in Environmental Sciences.
The Environment has always been a topic of concern for me. Years earlier I had worked on a science project for a science competition. It was a biosphere, a small one that fit in a fish bowl. Enclosed within were the essential ingredients needed for a biosphere. The project was a huge success and despite my not winning a slot within the first three positions, it gave me a working perspective on ecological and biological diversity. This was my first step to making my mark in this field. Over the next several years I worked on several science projects based on alternative energy sources compared to present day ozone depleting energy sources. The projects were of limited success given the scope of the audience but it did show a side of my forward thinking attitude. Over the years I have designed and developed several alternative transportation devices that varied in success. Nevertheless these projects secured my prospects in a field that has both promise and future.
My choice for majoring in Environmental Sciences was not without conflict. Born to Asian parents, the logical field of education was either an Engineer or a Doctor. After countless discussions of why I decided to change majors from Computer Engineering, my parents finally realized that the field I was heading into was not a bad field of choice. It may not be a professional degree but its still a degree based on a future that is wide open for me. Having conquered this initial challenge I took upon myself to learn as much as possible regarding this new field. I learnt that Environmental Science was no longer a field that required me running around trees like that what my dreams dictated. I learnt that a lot of what we do today can affect our future based on past and current events. I learnt that our Environmental conditions are dictated by corporate profits margins and their use of inefficient technology. My narrow vision of what Environmental Sciences was widened to include Business Strategies in today?s Environment. This new broader vision is where my ultimate goal in life is.
Going to a University to complete my Bachelors in Environmental Sciences is the first step to bringing about a world of difference to this Planet. My passion for this field ranges far greater than the two sheets of paper can ever dictate. Its only my practical side that can show you my focus and desire to succeed in a field that will ultimately bring new ideas to this ever growing important field.
With this I would like to end my Personal Story. A short but yet concise story on why I would like to join the UC System for the betterment of my future and yours too.
