Phenon C3 955 fan too loud for my dad.

I just upgraded my dad to modern technology from his P4 3.2 setup 🙂

He wishes the CPU fan was quieter, but doesn't want to spend $40-50+ on a new cooler. I use things at the $80+ level so I have no idea what's good down below that.

Are there any 60mm fans that are a good swap? He isn't overclocking at all, just wants it quiet 🙂

Thanks

Å

Does speedfan work on the new amd chips? or any other way to lower the fan speed?

I have an older revision of this AC Freezer Pro 7 and it is not very loud. I have it on a e5200 oc'd to 3.4 and it keeps the temps reasonable. I am not sure if it's enough for a phenom quad though.

He has C&Q on, when he is playing games the CPU starts to wind up and howl a bit. 🙂

I may just buy him or hunt down a used HSF to get this resolved.

If I still lived at home I think I'd have given him my TRUE already 😉.

What mobo is in that Phenom II setup?

I have two AMD setups, both AM2+. One is a gigabyte US2H, the other is an MSI 785GT-E63. They both have options in the mobo to set the cpu fan speed. For the gigabyte, it also comes with EasyTune (along with the drivers) that lets you control the fan speed in Windows. You set it once, then forget about it. You never have to hear the fan again.

The 125W 4-heatpipe AVC cooler that comes with the AMD processors have a max RPM of 6750 (at least, my settings says so). They start getting annoying at 5000 RPM. 4500RPM is a good balance for me in terms of cooling and noise. 4000 RPM may even be sufficient unless CPU loading is constantly high.

Well what you can do is use the auto fan setting in BIOS. Make sure to select the fan calibrate option first. Seems pretty quiet to me.

From what I've read, sometimes that fan is just annoyingly loud with little to do about it. I'd recommend swapping it out for the Hyper TX3 heatsink, if your case has the room for it. It's easy to install and is only $20 (got mine from Fry's).

That's assuming you can't find a way to quiet it down. I was unable to do so with my friend's.

I've been very pleased with this. ACF7 should be less than $30 shipped at a number of retailers, I think. That's also much quieter and more effective than the awful Phenom II 125W stock hsf.

You can also try undervolting the cpu - if you're not OC'ing the C3 chips often run perfectly stable with a bit less juice and that'll cut down on heat output.

Even at 4k rpm they are annoying, it just gets worse from there. $30 will buy a near completely quiet 120mm Fan HS and offer equal or better Cooling. The Silenx in my sig was $35cdn and was easily clipped onto my AM3 Mobo right from the box and orientates Front->Back(not all the cheaper HS do for AM 2/3). Just gotta be sure that your case has enough clearance for these Tower HSs first, but they're very nice for silence.

I may buy that for him...is the N520 quieter than the ACF7? $34 is cheap.

No, in my experience the Freezer 7 Pro is slightly but noticeably quieter than the N520. I had an ACF7 Pro on my last cpu & board, and an N520 on my current setup, everything else in the system is the same. The N520 is a superior cooler, though, at least according to my tests. Plus I bought the N520 on clearance at a local shop for $19.99, woo.

Ewiz has the ACF7 for $26 shipped & the N520 for $33 shipped. So if your primary concern is noise at stock clocks, go with the F7.

yeah...too many MC deals here posted up. I can post up my local spainish grocery for cheap items too, but most wouldn't get the deal.

Fortunately I am about 20 mins away from a local TigerDirect now. They have decent deals at times like my Z2300.

doesn't show up to order online though.

nvm...page is loading now. Still not showing up in search there though.

$26 with shipping.

If you can actually order it from MC like that, and there is enough room in the case, I wouldn't hesitate getting the 212+.
