I just purchased a phenom x3 8750 since it was $120, figured a decent upgrade if i could overclock it some from my x2 5000+ at 3.15GHz (hitting 53C under load).

Well I got it in and low and behold it hits 3.0GHz at .05v increase, so at 1.26v i'm running 38C idle and 43C load.

I'm no longer having frame rate drops in tf2 in heavy scenes and think I'm amazed by the power usage.

Thoughts, opinions? Should i try for 3.1GHz?

Nice.

Just goes to show you that people can find solutions with virtually any hardware choice. :)

Tf2 is multi-threaded? I know there is a fix to allow it to recognize multiple cores but have read it fucks things up.

I would think the 5000+ would be faster.

TF2 multithreading does work now. You forget that a 2.6GHz phenom is about on par with a x2 1MB cache at 3.2GHz...

Can you post what settings you changed in the bios? I've got the 8650 running on a 780G mobo and would like to try OCing a bit. Thanks.

On mine, a lot of stuff is auto still. I just upped the voltage to 1.275v, put the hyperthreading multiplier down to 7, and the fsb is at 250.

Yup, it seems that a lot of people think that the Phenom is equal to the K8 clock for clock when it comes to gaming. In reality the Phenom looks to be a good deal faster for gaming then it's usually given credit for. This article shows how much better Phenom is then the K8.
