Got my batch of p2's in and ready to test. Unfortunately since these are just machines I turn on to game with about 5-10 hours a week, I did not invest in aftermarket cooling. I am looking forward to trying to unlock cores and oc some - but was wondering what you all thought about max temps/oc on stock cooling.

Max safe operating temps for Phenom IIs is 62C. Most overclockers like to keep it at 55 or lower. Note if you unlock cores you can't read temp with your motherboard.

Based upon what I've read so far, some people are recommending 1) finding "your" limit at oc'ing 2 cores and note the temps. Next unlock cores and then add 3-5C if at quad core unlock. That about right? Anyone have stock cooler results to share?

I used the stock HSF that came with my X2 555 BE and its pretty terrible...~45C idle compared to 35C idle on my cheapo dusty Hyper 212+.

I'm surprised that the phenom II has such a low safe operating temperature. It wasn't that long ago that CPUs were built for 85C. Why the sudden change?

It has to do with where the temp is read, as well as smaller die sizes.

For example, i7 chips has sensors inside the chip, for each core. Max temp on those sensors is around 100C (most overclocks with good heat sink get around 65-70C per core under max load)

The 62C for Phenom II is at the MB sensor, which is external. The cores themselves would be much higher.
