Based on my previous question, it seems my initial choice of upgrading my cpu to an X6 was the correct one. Only question I've got is how this cpu performs on older chipset mobos like the 785G I'm using. My bios does support the X6 and since I have 8GB of DDR2 ram I want to use this mobo but have any of the X6 users kept their old mobos?

My X6 is running on 785G / DDR3. There's very little difference between running on DDR2 vs DDR3. You're looking at single digit performance difference.

I don't think the chipset has any affect on the performance of the cpu. You will however take a small performance hit for using DDR2 memory, but as mentioned already that is a single digit difference.

Thanks for the feedback. I was worried there might be issues with the older chipset. Does the X6 cause excess heat from the mosfets?

not that I've noticed. Did you reflash your bios to support the cpu ? My board while claiming to officially suport that cpu did not like the first bios release.

If your mobo officially supports X6 I don't see any issues regarding mosfets.

You might end up finding that its cheaper to buy a 790GX or 890GX board with DDR3, and then buying a RAM upgrade, then just buying an (expensive) DDR2 RAM upgrade. If you need to upgrade to 8gb or 16gb, for instance.

4gb DDR2 DIMMS = expensive. 4gb DDR3 DIMMS = cheap.

That chipset isn't exactly ancient, it was released in August 2009...and the updates since then have been minor at best.

I have a 1075T on a MSI 785GM uatx board and it runs great- even OCed. Make sure you get a board with heatsinks on the mosfets if you are going to OC it.

My Gigabyte 785G doesn't have a heatsink cooler for the mosfets. Will this be a big problem if there is plenty of air moving around them?

Definitely could be... depends on how much power the board is designed for. If it is a 125W design, an OCed X6 will draw more than that. There is a thread over at Hard Forum about which boards have burned out with X6's but I couldn't find it last night when I looked.
