Can anyone do some benchmarking for the Phenom II X6 in an AM2+ motherboard so we can see what the performance looks like?

I may pick one up if Microcenter ever gets around to stock a different stepping than 1008.

according to gigabyte, my 790x (ddr2, so am2+) board will take the 6 core phenoms..

but i doubt i'll ever go that route. too expensive for me >_<

I've got one of their AM2+ 780G boards and they claim support for Thuban too. It's already got an Athlon II X4 in it, not worth replacing for Thuban, especially when it's my HTPC.

Thuban should only be slightly slower on AM2+ than it is on AM3, Phenom II has already proven there is little performance difference between DDR2 and DDR3.

I popped a 1055T into my Gigabyte 785g AM2+, clocked it to 3360MHz and compared it to an unlocked 550BE when transcoding (a Family Guy episode) in Handbrake (using GSkill DDR2 at 800MHz).

It scaled in almost a perfect linear fashion, but I suspect you are more interested in a comparison with DDR3 ....

And I think it will make little difference, if any.

edit: The volts also scaled but I had under-volted the 550BE to around 130w at load. The 1055T ran at a bit less than 188w at stock (which was amazingly similar to the 550BE before I under-volted it).

I didn't have time to under-volt the 1055T before it went out the door --- if I secure another I'll give it a try.

Why? Is 1008 bad?

I've just never seen/heard of 1008 steppings. Even the review units were made in week 10 (1010), and what everyone else has is also made week 10 or after. Of course it's not very logical way of thinking and I do enjoy taking risks other times, but I'd like to be safer on this one because I have been satisfied with 955BE @3.6 GHz for some time. If I'm going to spend $300 for a CPU at this point, I'd like to have a 4.0 GHz one.
