I got an e-mail from AMD offering me a PII X4 955 Black Edition & a HD4870 for $199 shipped.
The PII is OEM, I assume, since they stated it will NOT come w/stock HSF.
I'm currently running an i7 system so this deal didn't really excite me too much.
I was wondering, however, if there's still a market for these CPU's. Usually when I get an e-mail like this from AMD the CPU's are on the way out & are practically worthless when they finally arrive.
When I think about it, if I bought this & just kept the video card (a nice upgrade from my 4850), I doubt by selling the PII that I would break even, would I (assuming I was in the market for a 4870 & had to lay out the cash)?

Doubt the 955 is on the way out - it may not be the flagship any more, but it's AMD's second fastest quad core CPU and only 200 MHz slower than the 965. The 940 is probably the only one that's being phased out (if it hasn't been already), because it's DDR2 only.

It's a very good deal - the 955BE alone costs almost $200 new.

Trade that 4870 for some cash and another 4850.

The cpu will sell itself.

Since when does AMD email people selling their stuff like that? I'd like to sign up to get emails for a 955 and 4870 for 200 dollars

Me too. That would be a very nice upgrade from an Athlon X2 and HD3870.

I didn't get the email, but if I did I would be all over the offer. Are you sure it is directly from AMD?
I wonder if the offer could be shared with fellow ATers ;)
