On a M4A78T-E motherboard, what's the slowest I can possibly run this chip?

Its replacing a server that has happily run an AthlonXP 2500+ for roughly 7 years. Just want to keep the electricity consumption to an absolute minimum.

Or does the processor itself down-throttle itself enough that just changing the main clock speed won't have any effect?

I know this isn't perhaps an optimum solution, but the CPU was free, and I need the PCI-E and PCI slots available in a full-sized board to support its intended application.

You should be able to go as low as 400 MHz for your lowest P state (a cool n quiet activity hierarchy). read about this guy and his experiences with a program called K10stat, which is what I think you will want to use since you can specify the parameters of each P-state individually.

and here's a guy with a Phenom II 810 and M4A78T doing the same (just look at the whole thing, it's an undervolt anthology thread)

you shouldn't have any problem.

great post dude

comment: the voltage graphs / frequency is more exponential decay not linear like he draws the line.

OP, if you OC with the FSB you'll likely get more performance at whatever given clockspeed.
