Phenom II, any questions you have for me?

I recently went to the event AMD had in Chicago. If you have any questions I will answer what I can. The main thing I don't know is the price but they said that the 940 will run somewhere between $300-400. They also did a comparison to the intel i7 Extreme edition 965. Both PCs had the same parts in them(except for Mobo and CPU of course) and at *STOCK* they were completely equal.(in crysis and CoH). Now if they OCed the 965 then intel probably would win.

I would guess that they hadn't determined what the final stock speed of the chip was at that time (or it was under NDA and he couldn't tell you).

well he told us it will run at 3.0GHz stock, but that ours will run at an undetermined speed, hopefully its faster

It's an immutable truth of physics no thanks to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle.

Since you will know precisely where your Phenom II cpu is located once you install it, you cannot know with any degree of certainty what it's speed (velocity or momentum) is.

Not to mention the added variable of Doppler-shift in the CPU's apparent operating frequency (no thanks to Herr Einstein's time dilation) as you walk towards or away from your computer system for those bathroom and/or coffee breaks.

The AMD guy was right. Phenomanally (sp? ) spot on.

All of those are awesome prizes except the Killer NIC. They should have replaced that door prize with a mid-performance tier OCZ 64GB SSD.

I dont have it in my possesion and the 920 will run at its normal stock speed.

How come when people talk "equal" when relating to CPUs they use gaming tests? But folding, crunching, 3d, transcoding, encoding, and pretty much everything else other than synthetics or games is ignored?

Also was "stock" as you put it removing HT and Turbo on the i7? Cause that's what a lot of early leaked reviews are doing...that's not stock really. Stock is put in the CPU, turn on the system and test.

they didn't say whether or not they removed HT or turbo. All they said was they put the CPU in and ran it in games. I also agree with you on them only testing games, I would of liked them to try some other types of programs to see which was better

Yeah...man I hope it's good cause at least prices will start to decline on Intel parts to try to compete in some way. Once the consumer/desktop i7 parts begin shipping and the C2Q is slowly phased out.

I just hate seeing games tested as an indication of CPU performance when so many of the games tested need GPU power and what's more, you need multi gpu setups to determine if either CPU is holding the GPUs back. I'd love to see photoshop tests and stuff like that. Things we actually use. Hopefully AT and others will do this type of testing.

Also if games are run at high resolution+high detail/AA, they're gpu limited so the cpu differences will be masked. Did they say what resolution and what detail they ran at?

Chris(i believe this was his name) one of the AMD techs said they were running all the games at the highest possible resolution and detail, with no AA, and no vsync, and AF up all the way

So there you go. Unless they had tri-SLI or quad x-fire, there was no way that case is cpu limited, so pretty much all quick quad cpus will perform the same.
