I'm relatively new to AMD, and am looking for some recommendations for a matx board for a Phenom 9850. I received the processor for free, and am planning on putting it in an Thermaltake Lanbox. I usually buy my stuff from Newegg, but when I looked, there were just too many boards to choose from. I was hoping an expert here could give me some advice on a good board. I'm looking for something rather inexpensive and maybe to play a few games like Civ or another strategy type game. I was planning on getting a graphics card, so onboard video doesn't matter much. The operating system will be XP. Any help is appreciated. I was really getting lost figuring out the benefits from the 780, 785, and 790 boards for amd. I'm pro Intel, but was looking to try something new. Thanks

An AM2+/AM3 (DDR2/DDR3) mATX motherboard with either the sb710 or sb750 southbridge (includes something called ACC - Advanced Clock Calibration) will allow a reasonable OC (400MHz+) without too much difficulty.

ACC is not required for the Phenom IIs --- but has the added benefit of unlocking cores on the Ph-IIs (if you have good Karma) when you decide to park the 9850.

Make sure you pick up the right memory type and board according to your need. You'll find 785G boards with DDR2 or DDR3 support. Since you've got a Phenom 9850, you'll need a board with DDR2 support.

This.

I brain-farted on the DDR3.

edit: The sb750 boards would be the way-to-go. Be fore-warned with 'open box' deals you most likely will not receive an I/O shield or any cables.
