I have my phenom 9850 OC'ed to 3ghz on a K92A w/$15 rosewill cooler and its running OCCT 2.0 24/7 rock solid. Some people have hit 3.2 on air...let me know what/how well yours is doing!

cheers

Welcome to anandtech, hawkeen. There are only a couple of people around here with Phenoms, but they have the older B2 steppings. You're the first I've seen so far with a 9850. Why don't you fill us in a bit more on the details, like what settings/voltages yours required, how it performs, etc?

Yeah, from what I read there is more to it then just bumping the multiplier/fsb, right ? HTT overclocking, NB overclocking and all that ? Lots of voltages to play with? The more info the merrier :)

I am going to order a 9850BE next week, so nothing to report yet. I also have a K9A2 Platnum. I don't have a goal speed, but I'll see how far I can push it.

So what's your voltage and temperatures for 3 ghz?

I have my at 3 ghz with stock everything. All I did was raise the multiplier. I did not touch anything else. I ran OCCT 14 hours w/o any problems! I think to get higher, you need to start tweaking voltages/etc and I have not done that yet.

One thing that helps with stability was that I turned the rosewill cooler around and the fan is blowing through the fins and the air goes over the MOSFETS and out the backside into my big 120MM fan.

So far very stable and quiet. At full load using OCCT 2.0.0.a my temps never go beyond 54C.

Here is the cooler I am using and it is very good especially for $15.
rosewill $15 phenom 9850 heatsink/fan that is awesome!

I may post some pics of the 14 hr OCCT cpu stress session later.

cheers

Thats good news. I need to invest in a 9850BE and stop messing with my 9600BE. 2.5.GHz is the max stable that I can get out of my BE in stock trim. A better heatsink and fan setup may get me more, but I'd rather spend my money on the 9850BE.

Edit: Here is my Phenom OC thread btw: link

Get a better cooler on there and im sure you can pump some more volts and get 3.2+. with 54c already under load theres not much room for voltage increase.

I have my q6600 under a tuniq tower, with 1.375v and 3.5ghz i dont break 55-60 ever.

Has anyone with a Phenom tried overclocking the cores individually? I was thinking that maybe just overclocing core 0 and 1 and leaving the other cores at stock speed might keep temps down a bit so a higher overclock on the other two cores may be possible? Just a thought.

HI im new to this fourum

hope this helps in sig is my new toy and i still got more room to oc . my voltage is at1.38 and stable 52 C idle and under load it hits 66C ON AIR im not going to push it till i flat lap my cpu and set up my water cooling im thinking of water cooling the chipset also im going to try for 3.6 if it will go that high but right now on air im and the heatsink im using is the ZEROtherm nivarana nv120 i will post more in the future with pictures and benches

3.75v!? Wowzer. My 9600BE's stock voltage is 1.200v. What is the stock voltage on the 9850BE's?

Must be a typo, no amount of cooling would allow a chip to survive @ 3.75V :p

I think stock voltage is 1.30V.

My HC12 took 5V to power. I actually ended up using a NiCad battery for the input filter because it had much better capacitance values than any combination of Capacitors I tested. (In theory, I would only need a large cap, and all the small values would take care of themselves, but in reality large caps don't do well with fast input noise; batteries on the other hand handle all noise well.)
