O.P., try taking your X4 to 4.0 Ghz to see if that gives you the extra performance you need. I have a Phenom II X4 and there is a marked difference in Skyrim going from 3.7 Ghz to just 4.0 Ghz. Might buy you some time until Steamroller. If that doesn't do it for you, get an FX-8350 since you have an AM3+ mobo.

Agreed with the exception that Steamroller is likely to appear in 2014, a year from now at the earliest if it appears at all.

This is exactly why I keep recommending the 6 core FX chips for budget gaming over a dual core i3. Yeah, the dual core is fast, but those 6 core chips with an overclock can maintain high enough framerates and as games get more threaded they will age better than an i3.

Its going to be a nice tick upgrade.

8 physical cores compared to 4 on the phenom or 6c.

Grab a 8350 and OC the heck out of it. make it 4.5Ghz stable and its a great CPU,,
You will notice a speed difference from desktop to games. gl

A smoother experience is what I want. I am a enthusiast, but really, 60 FPS with no hiccups, skips or lags is FAR BETTER than having hardware push 120 or more.

Thanks. Mine is OC'd to 4Ghz through the ASUS Mobo Bios. It still is just not giving me a smooth experience. If you look at the rest of my specs, there really isnt anything to change. I have also tested all my hardware for defects or malfunctions and everything is working properly.

Wow, nice! I just updated my bios the over day to prep for an FX CPU just in case I decided to go that way. right now I have the Phenom which is 3.7 Ghz stock to 4Ghz. Not seeing much of a difference right now though. See, in most games, I get an average of 55-85 FPS. Sounds great right? Well, that is good on paper, but what I see on the screen is alot of skipping, texture popins, slow downs and such. I know alot may have to do with drivers and patches, but my brother doesnt even have a system close to mine, and he can run BF3 maxed out with less FPS smoother than I can. I has to be a bottlenecking situation and my HDD and CPU are the only things in my mind it could be.

If you are seeing corrupted graphics in BF3("skipping, texture popins, slow downs and such") then it has something to do with your GPU and not your CPU.

Been down that road a bunch and switched out video cards 3 times. It is not the GPU

also could be your internet connetion causing lag as i had a FX 4100 and HD 6950 2GB which is slower than your Phenom II x4 980 BE and GTX 670 and i never had lag issues

Just go intel and call it a day. Buy your new setup hook it up and sell your old one to offset the cost.

I have thought about a clean install of windows, but I have almost 400 gigs of games and progs. lol I don't want to spend a couple days just reinstalling progs. The only way that is worth it to me is if I get a SSD. Then I will, but I hear those are unreliable so I am still on the fence about it.

You should go SSD as soon as possible, you dont know what you're missing.

I highly doubt the CPU is the problem its gotta be something else as a Phenom II x4 shouldn't have problems with BF3
