At stock:

Just check the gaming benches.

I would go in for the Phenom X4 955 and just overclock it. The 965 is just a higher clocked 955. Thus, for pure gaming, I believe the 955 is the better price/performance choice. However, if you don't mind spending $200 for your CPU, the i5 750 is your leading choice.

Newegg had a sick 955 + SATA 3.0 Gigabyte board for $255, gone now...too bad.

I was on the fence too between the 955, 965 and the i5-750. Then I stopped by Frys and picked up a P55 crossfire board and the i5-750 for $219-$20 mir. That was an easier decision then!

If I could get that deal, I'd buy another one :D

When overclocked, it is. Whether or not this justifies the extra expenditure that you usually have to undergo to get the 750, is up to you.

Until that $200 i5 750 deal, I would have said AMD all the way-- especially when you can get the 965 + DDR2 mobo for $180.

There's no contest when it's only $20 more and the motherboard has the same features.

Chip to chip, Deneb can't compete against Lynnfield. Most of competitiveness in favor of Deneb comes from external factors, such as prices, variety of platform choices available (i.e. Lynnfield can't function without P55 but Deneb works with 780G/790GX/790FX, etc.), flexible upgrade paths, etc.

Glad to know I got a good deal then :) Now I’m just waiting for UPS to deliver the rest of my stuff from newegg. This weekend’s going to be great. I’ll get to show my 8 y/o how to build a pc, and then bask in the glory of upgrading from a 19”ws to 24.6” 1080p. And then play some dragon age maxed out with a new XFX HD 5850 Black edition. *menacingly rubbing hands together*

It's funny, I was in a similar boat and went the other way. I built my system in Oct '09 and I was really debating between the i7-860 and i5-750. Then Frys dropped a 965/Gigabyte combo for $200 (back when the 965 alone was selling for $215 or so). At the time, the much cheaper DDR2 prices made it a no-brainer for me to pick-up the combo as I saved $150 to $200 over a comparable Intel/DDR3 set-up.

Let's just say that I feel incredibly fortunate to live near a Fry's AND Microcenter.

Honestly yall will never tell the difference in speeds when in desktop or gaming.

Soo if your going to make a choice just choose the company you like better. Cuz your not gonna see no difference. A AMD quad and a intel quad will never get 100 percent used even @ stock speeds. NBA 2K10 takes up avg 60 percent 70 percent. Crysis takes up 40 percent to 70 percent. No matter on 2.4 or 3.4 same fps, now if you get a new Fermi then it will also utilize the cores better. Youll never hit 100 percent constant, if you do then its time to upgrade. gl

I remember that deal. I was pissed I didn't jump on the 965/mobo deal for $189? or $179? So when this i5-750 deal hit, I just ran with it :)
