With a coupon code the phenom 9600 can be had for about 135 shipped. I only have a 4200+ x2 now that over clocks to 2.5 or so on my htpc used for upconverting with ffshow. For this type of rendering is this a good price as I don't want to break the bank?

Could you drop the chip into your current motherboard?

The 9600 is borked, and to de-bork it you lose quite a bit of performance (25% IIRC). It might be a good value if you don't need the motherboard, but why not spend a little more to have a chip that is bug-free?

If you need a motherboard, an E7200 is barely more expensive and a far better value IMO.

actually the TLB bug RARELY affects desktop apps
therefore you don't need to enable the fix and you lose no performance (99% of desktop cases

if it can be a drop-in chip i would say go for it

i got a 9550 a while back as a combo (210 for CPU and MOBO shipped) reaches 3ghz on my MSI K9A2 platinum, but unfortunately only 2.8 on the ECS it came with

9550 has the bug fixed. :p

i wanted to try out the 95W 9750's but there so rare. Id have to pray to the AMD god to find one in stock.

want my advice?

E3400 is that the gateway model number?

i never heard of a cpu called e3400, did you mean e4300?

if it is the e4300, id use that 160 on a E7200 and overclock that. Seems like you overclock, and you'd have way more fun on a E7200.

ok so I have an e4300 my sig had an error but my current htpc board is a GA-Ma78gm-2sh with the integrated ati hd 3200 chipset which is AM2+ compatible so for 135 shipped for the 9600 phenom i can drop that in without any other problems. I did hear about the bugs on these chips but I am not certain what that means real world. I will be using it for upconverting movies using a multi-threading capable ffshow program so I realize Intel might be better but for 135 you can't touch any intel quad core so I am thinking this is the best deal.

additionally new egg has the 9750s in stock but these mobos are not supposed to be used with teh 125W processors so I am sticking with the 95W since it will be running at full load when upconverting.
