Phenom 955 on a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3, can I add 10600 ram to 12800 ram?

My dad's motherboard died, he now has a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 with a Phenom 955 (not o/c'd).

We added G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL to be sure it wasn't RAM (the old ram tested fine though).

Can he add his: GeIL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10660) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model GV34GB1333C7DC

I think he is fine with 8GB now (running 64 bit Win7). He wants to use his old ram for 12GB.

Thanks

You can mix but you have to go to BIOS and make sure the timings and memory frequency and voltage are good for both brand of RAM and memory frequency of the ripjaws will go down to 10600 , to be compatible.

be sure to carefully read what tweakboy said. the geil seems like cas 7 timings, and the gskill looks like cas 9.

my intuition tells me you should be able to run both of these @ 1600 cas 9 without issue.
