Pharmaceutical Sales

Was looking at sales jobs last night and I came across Pharmaceutical. I heard you can make a lot of money at it, is this true. Any one sell Pharmaceutical here? How would someone who has no background in it get started?
Sorry to be so similar to your thread rh71,

Well my dad does it for a living. Its alot of work but they are paid very good. If you have strong computer skills and good study habits to learn all the new drugs etc you will go very far.

HMMMMM, i didnt have good study habits in highschool, got a little better in college?

Well if you mde it tru college you can do it. Just make sure you like the med field cause depending on the drug you might not like all the nasty stuff you might have to learn.

You have to be a REALLY good salesman to do this job. One of my sister's co-worker's husband is a Pharm Rep. He brings in the dough.

Well, I could be completely speaking out of my ass here, but I think anymore, a PharmD (3-4 year program) is quickly becoming a pre-req to be a drug sales rep.

[edit]Or at least a competitive one.

yes, i finished. i mite check into that starting later on tonite. thanks for the info. tell your father i may come for his commission

hmm, i think it depends on what kind of sales you want to do. you definitely need some formal training in biology, at least an undergraduate degree. one of my majors is cell and molecular bio - my school sent me an e-mail saying that a few pharma companies are recruiting for a sales position this year.

Well, i am selling IT crap all the time, but came across pharm sales. I heard you can make some moolah, but they wont look at me unless i have some biology background? I have none, the last biology class i had was in 96

Not true

My dad has his undergrad in History and he is doing great in this field and has been for 20 plus years. I think it is all about your willingness to learn new things. This field is almost like IT because it is always changing.

Suffice it to say, the requirements to enter the field 20 years ago were slightly less prohibitive than what they are now.

I cant argue with that? That is true

One of my wife's friends is a sales rep for Pfizer. Sounds like she makes some bank and has pretty slack hours.
Oh yeah, she's pretty hot too (I think that's a prerequisite)

College buddy does pharma sales and he makes upwards of $80k and he's only been out of school for 3 years. Started above $50k... but he was #1 (or close - I forget what he was trying to brag) in sales last year. You'd never know it if you knew the guy... wouldn't strike you as a business-guy / go-getter...

EDIT>> Pfizer too.

Hey man,
Im hott

I went to Pharmacy school for awhile for my PharmD, but really became bored with it so I made a career change. The money is good and pharmacy jobs are in demand, but it wasn't my cup of tea. If thats the career your aiming for enroll in a Pharmacy program or PharmD program (6 years in Pharmacy school).

Good looking, good talking, and a PharmD are a good start.

I work with them every day. These also will help Sharp Dressing, Good Primper, Semi-Famous College/Pro Athlete, Great a$s kisser, a sparkling personality or Just a Monster in OUTSIDE sales ...

All you do Is buy off people make them like you and your company that is it and you have DEEP POCKETS to do it.

Very lucrative but also very difficult job to get as it is very desirable.

she's pretty hot too (I think that's a prerequisite)
ding ding sing we have a winner. I have met one fat drug rep but she was a monster salesperson 😀 also really nice

Noone gets rich being a drug rep, but they make a good living, have great benefits and a great lifestyle.

The catch is you have to be self-motivated and organized.

I know you need a 4 year degree and while you can make alot of money, if you aren't pushing products, you probably won't. Just like sales anywhere.

i know quite a few drug reps, and work with them everyday. i know almost none that are pharm D's. that is way overkill for the position. my friend is one, and he was a journalism major in college.

as far as the job, there is good money making potential, but you have to be willing to be a "drug whore". basically what you do is talk to doctors who are way too busy to have you around. you buy them lunches and try to talk to them about your drug, and why its better than the others. as a physician, i enjoy the free lunches, and free stuff, but rarely have time to really listen to what they have to say. so if you like making alot of money, and dont mind trying to kiss alot of arses that dont want you kissing them, it is a good job.

one more thing, a really good job to consider is a sales rep for a surgical equipment company (like orthopaedic implants). The jobs pay REALLY well (eeasily over six figures). Usually only a bachelors degree is necasary, and unlike a drug rep, the physicians listen to these people, and enjoy having them around. They are present in the actualy surgeries, and explain the new equipment to the surgeons. the one trade off, is that these people are on call all hours of the day. They have to be ready to be present for an emergency surgery using their equipment at anytime of the day.

it would be a really good job for someone who wants to make a lot of money, but who has few other responsibilities to tend to (ie family)
