Was the score to the 1986 musical at all based on the original score composed for the 1925, 1927, 1929, or 1940's movies? Specifically the overture?

Never heard that, but it seems believable that ALW might have based some things on the old film scores.

I think that he lifted themes at least from the earlier works.

I don't think he used any of those older film scores, probably would have been some copyright issue as well.

It's different.

The 1986 version is also like the film version. Film version is almost exactly the same just with different singers.

I have seen the other versions, They are VERY different, down to the story line...
