Phantom Flusher

I was thinking of ways to try and identify who this mysterious cracker is, and to also make sure that they are legit blocks.

What I was thinking is this. If the boys at DNet would either give us access to one day's log file (huge I am sure), let us cross reference one of our members, say JonB (who is submitting mostly OGR now), that way we could identify the IP address of the Phantom Flusher.

Or, if DNet is unwilling to share the log file with us due to security or privacy of other members, then we could compose a perl script to pull out only one (of a few ) TA members who are benefiting fromt the PF. If it turns out to be a limited number of IP's in a specific range, then we can assume it someone who has access to one hell of a herd, if it's a whole spectrum of IP's, then we can assume it might be a trojan of some kind.

If you could point to one thing that might be the most detrimental to the team, I believe it to be the PF. It's killed a lot of good races (Ray and KingHam are a great example). Racing was the single biggest draw for me (BGod and I went toe to toe for a while there).

I know the PF is helping us catch /. before DPC catch us, but I for one would rather we got there knowing we did it the old fashioned way, WE ASSIMILATED MORE!!!!!!!

***Edit***

Just fixed some spelling errors.

BurntKooshie, that is correct, Ray left the PF blocks in the old email and started a new one (I think that's what he did).

That account would be great to try and track through, shouldn't be anything except PF blocks there!:)

Jator you have very valid and important points

I dont think Dnet wants to do anything because of the manpower and time involved, and more importantly because of the 'scandal' and the whining that would follow.

They surely know there is a problem, but there is no easy way out for them..

we know basicaly the members that are benefiting, at least the top 10 or so anyway..

I agree,
and yes, all of my herd are cracking under the TWTA email addy. The only blocks going to my old email address are the PhF:|.

I will PM you with that email.

I think it's an idea with merrits. If you wish to proceed, write up a letter for Dnet stating that we'd like to answer the PhF question, and that if Dnet doesn't allready know the answer(and if they do, they have a lot of explaining), we'd like to have permission to use a Perl program to strip a day's logs, in order to answer the question. I advise the Perl part, as showing that we thought about it ahead of time would make the idea more likely to fly. Afterwards, we can have the "PhF" crew(all of us affected by the PhF) sign on, and hopefully answer the question once and for all.:eek:

Well, I guess it couldn't hurt to try. I defnitely think that the letter should come from soneone who is being affected by PHf. In other words, whoever's blocks we are going to examin better be the one to send the letter. I'll start working on a letter this week. I'm out of town Sunday and Mon-Wed I have my night classes on top of my daytime job, so be patient.

Oh, and anyone volunteer for the Perl script? THat's way out of my league right now.

Jator, I know what you mean by this;

<< I defnitely think that the letter should come from soneone who is being affected by PHf >>

But we have all been affected in one way or another. In my case, I was ranked about 68th in the team listing before PhF started mucking around. Now I'm at 94 :(
At any rate, if we can find a way to get rid of this turkey, I'm ALL for it!
I wish I could offer some intelligent suggestions on how to do it, but I'm just not that smart about this stuff.

We really don't need an more intelligent solutions, as one exists. We just need those that were directly affected by the PhF(sorry xrayman, but I doubt Dnet would care about your condition:() to write a letter to Dnet, and for someone to write a stripping program(and now that I think of it, any lang would do, it just needs to do its job). Dnet will listen if we raise our voices loud enough.:)

ViRGE,
If you think Dnet doesn't care about STATS, then you need to do a little re-thinking.

Without STATS;

No Competition
No Assimilation
No TEAMS
And probably NO DNET!!

The PhF has taken some of the fun out of RC5 for me and likely for many others. If you really want Dnet to get the message we should all send email.
;)

Has anyone heard anything from DNET on this? So far, I have a little over 300,000 blocks from the Phantom Flusher and am kind of curious as to DNET's position on this. It would be easy to seperate mine out, as all the legit ones will be from the same ip. Anyone have any more info?
