Not sure if this is the right forum to post this, but looks most cpu-relevant to me so here it goes.
I returned from the local fry's store with a i7/P55 combo, ready to replace one of the to boxes at my house. One is a phenom II 710 which failed to unlock, clocks up to about 3.2ghz stable. The other is a e6400@3.4ghz on a P35 board. Between the two, I have a total of 12GB ram (4x2GB and 4X1GB).
Now, there is no way I am going to need a third computer (sorry, I am not a folder) so one of these are gonna have to go. As is, the C2D is being used a secondary rig as it has an inferior vid card on it, I use it for playing music, downloading stuff, storing files and occsassional gaming. As far as I can tell, I won't be doing any encoding, 3d rendering, or anything outside of pure entertainment on either of these machines.
I ended up with two computers simply because how cheap ram and PhII combo was at the beginning of the year, but funny how ram prices shot up and made selling DDR2 a worthwhile trouble. If I were to keep just one of them, say with 4gb of ram (1gb x4), which one shall it be? The only real metric that pertains me in terms of performace is gaming. I am inclined to say the third core of phII is likely to work better in the long run, but I could be wrong.
Another way to look at it is how much cash I am going to be able to muster out of these. I have no experience selling gear on ebay or craiglist, so I was going to try the FS/FT forums here first. The fact we are not allowed to post price inquiry threads makes it a bit harder to judge which one is worth more resale value wise. I was planning on scanning some threads to get a feel for it, but decided to ask you guys first (well I am working on it now
). PhII looks like a better value for me to keep (less cash to be recouped from selling), but again I could be wrong here.
