PFC / non-PFC power supply. can they be interchanged?

according to the ibm site the p/s is "uATX, Non PFC Version", can i put a uATX PFC power supply in in its place?

Either a PFC or non-PFC supply would work as it really only applies to how the PSU converts the AC to DC current (PFC is marginally more efficient in doing this). In other words, from the motherboard's and peripherals' perspective, their only concern is that they get DC current.

edit: What IBM product are you looking at? I'm flatout assuming they state "non-PFC" just to be overly descriptive, but I guess I'm curious now. :p

An advantage of a PFC PSU's is that it is auto-voltage so it accepts anywhere from 100-240v(some have even wider ranges). To me this is a worthwhile feature as its like having an AVR (auto voltage regulator) built-in the PSU so its more tolerant of electrical spikes and sags.

so the output to the board is essentially the same, just better regulated and they are interchangeable?

replaced the power supply and the new one blew up :(, looks like a new computer...

PFC only matters if you're running a LOT of computers and paying the electric bill.

It's certainly advantageous to pay a few extra dollars for Active PFC rather than for a mock gold-plated fan guard or lighted fan or somesuch nonesense. Somone posted recently from Australia about sporking their PSU because they had switched it to the wrong voltage input. Other advantages besides lower cost of ownership, stable power and automatic switching is the reduction of EMI and RFI and the higher efficiency should generate less heat and thus allow for lower fan speed and reduced noise.
