From a People For the American Way letter:

George W. Bush's decision to nominate former Sen. John
Ashcroft to the position of Attorney General--the nation's chief
enforcer of civil rights laws--is an insult to every person who is
committed to our nation's promise of equal justice for all. People
For the American Way strongly opposes Ashcroft's nomination, and we
urge you to support our efforts to fight his confirmation.

Ashcroft's record on civil rights is abysmal. More than twenty
years ago, as Missouri's Attorney General, Ashcroft brought suit on
behalf of the State of Missouri against the National Organization for
Women because NOW called for a convention boycott against states who
refused to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The courts rejected
this attempt to suppress NOW's political activities. More
recently, as a United States Senator, Ashcroft led a deceptive and
reprehensible campaign that ultimately led to the Senate's rejection
of federal judicial nominee Judge Ronnie White. Judge White was the
first African American to sit on the Missouri State Supreme Court and
was highly qualified for appointment to the U.S. District Court.

Ashcroft's voting record in Congress is equally troubling. He voted
against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and against the Hate
Crimes Prevention Act, but voted for vouchers and voted to eliminate
the National Endowment for the Arts. Ashcroft has vehemently opposed
all choice laws, and opposes abortion, even in cases of rape and
incest. Ashcroft has close ties with Religious Right leaders, and
has received 100% ratings from the Christian Coalition and Phyllis
Schlafly's Eagle Forum. Conversely, the National Organization for
Women, the National Abortion Rights Action League, the Human Rights
Campaign and the League of Conservation Voters have all given
Ashcroft 0% ratings. The Leadership Council on Civil Rights gave
Ashcroft a 10% rating.

We hope you'll join us in our opposition, and will fight Ashcroft's
confirmation to the position of United States Attorney General.

PFAW PRESIDENT RALPH G. NEAS' STATEMENT

While it is extremely rare for People For the American Way to oppose
an Executive Branch nomination, we must oppose strongly the
nomination of John Ashcroft to be Attorney General of the United
States.

The Attorney General of the United States is not only the lawyer for
the President, but also the lawyer for the people of the United
States. He is the principal enforcer of our nation's civil rights
laws.

John Ashcroft is the antithesis of the person required to lead the
Department of Justice. With the possible exception of Senator Jesse
Helms, I do not believe anyone in the United States Senate has a more
abysmal record on civil rights and civil liberties.

The office of Attorney General is the worst executive branch
position for George W. Bush to use as political payback to the far
right. This nomination is an insult to every person who is committed
to our nation's promise of equal justice for all.

The nomination of John Ashcroft to Attorney General is a particular
poke in the eye to African Americans after Ashcroft's incredibly
irresponsible behavior to block the federal judicial nomination of
Judge Ronnie White.

This is truly an astonishingly bad nomination.

Wasn't it Algore that said he was praying for Bush's term in office to be successful, and how he believed in God's plan for this country? Not to mention the comment about how he and his family would be attending church the Sunday following his concession and praying for the country's well being and an end to the division that's "threatening to tear the country apart". And last but not least, his comment "God bless Amaerica" at the end of his speech. So, this would then imply that Gore's a Christian too, would it not? Or is this just another lie from Gore?

If he was sincere, then how dare he force his religious views on the poor unsuspecting Americans that were glued to their TV sets in ferral anticipation awaiting his heart-wrenching words of wisdom?

Of course, I think it was all just an act and he was lying. He was just spitting out what most people wanted to hear and didn't mean a word of it. So, you're safe... I'm sure he's just another Godless heathen and you can be proud of him. :)

It's amazing -- change the negative view of that letter, and you have EVERY GOOD REASON to support the nomination. Sounds like the perfect man for the job.

Of course, I'm sure the Democrats hate him because he's actually alive.

The point is, Andrew, that the man is supposed to represent the ENTIRE country, not just the minority of voters that share your views.

<< point is, Andrew, that the man is supposed to represent the ENTIRE country, not just the minority of voters that share your views. >>

Last I heard Bush can nominate whom he wants without the Left's consent. Just because the people that live in large cities don't like him doesn't mean that he isn't capable of doing a great job. I think it's a great choice after suffering through all the Leftist "feel good" BS we've had to wade through for the last 8 years.

Leftist moron - "Oh no! He's against "Hate Crime" legislation!"

Conservative guy - "So? How many people do you think were murdered because they were loved too much?"

Leftist moron - "But we need to take a stand and make sure these people know that we won't tolerate racially/ethnically/sexual orientationally inspired violence!"

Conservative guy - "So, what are you going to do to these guys if they're found guilty of a "Hate Crime"? Execute them? Prison without parole?"

Leftist moron - "No, we'll just make them feel bad by giving their crime a really nasty label. They'll be the stigma of their communities!"

Conservative guy - "Ooooo, yeah. You can assault them with harsh language. That always works."

<<<Conservative guy walks away from Liberal wanker in disgust>>>

Your Civil Liberties are at stake with Ashcroft in office, big difference between that gorilla that was in office. On the otherhand this will only go to destroy the Republikan Party as it is now. Go ahead and make prayer in school legal, overthrow Roe v. Wade, Censor all those naughty magazines and Occult books (wizard of Oz comes to mind), make sure women stay at home or at least wear appropriate clothing in the company of men on and on and on. At least finally we will end up with Political party who is really about Small goverment, Lower taxes and getting the goverment out of our lives instead of the Realigious Right ass kisser party it is now.

Thorn,
You are an ass. The hate crime legislation would add a stiffer penalty to crimes not matter the size and consiquence, ie; you spraypaint "I love bill" on a Jewish Temple, your crime = Vandalism, You Spraypaint a Swastika on a Jewish Temple = Vandalism + Extra time/fine for the "hate crime". Not to hard to figure out is it? Or do you think that even though someone would go out of thier way to spray a swastika on a temple is just a vandal?

Now girls and boys...
Let's pay a short visit to REALITY.

Ashcroft will be confirmed with a relatively brief
discussion about a few questionable events in his
background.

Why?
Because he is an exsenator.
And the Senate confirms these nominations.
And the Senate is the world's most exclusive,
and powerful, private club.
In a word... they take care of each other.

Last time I checked the Attorney General didn't have the power to do any of that stuff alone. Care to make some factual claims, Shux, or are you just going ramble on semicoherently about random unsubstantiated claims some more?

The Att. General has a say in Supreme Court justices, as well as outlining Federal Laws, sure Ashcroft doesnt hold enough power to do all those things like they were quoted in is more in reference to the position of the Realigious Right and the Right Wing policies that Ashcroft and Bush support.

Actually, Thorn, GWB can do just about whatever he wants, as POTUS, with a majority in congress. I am fervently hoping that he plays to his puppeteers in such a way that he exposes himself and his party for what they truly are...I also find it amusing that people such as yourself actually think you are represented by RepubliKlans. The RepubliKlans in power care almost as little about you as they do about me; the primary difference between me and you is that you are dumb enough to give them your support. If you live the same life you live now, with the same beliefs, and did not support the party, they would not care for you at all. You can spin that any way you want to, but the fact remains the same: if you are not a Fat Wallet contributor, you don't mean $hit to your party.

One difference is the democratic party base is among the poor and uneducated of the US. Question, which party has more of an interest at stake in keeping a majority of the US poor and uneducated?

And if you're not a wealthy Hollywood Socialist you don't mean sh!t to yours.

No, the main difference is that you're a Liberal pig who can't understand the dangers of Socialism. I'm not a Republican, I'm a Libertarian and even I can see that Bush and the majority of other Republicans aren't trying to take away anyone's rights. Conservatives just want to make government smaller. You want to talk about rights? What about my right to make donations to whom I want? What about my right to use my tax $$$ to pay for the schools I want my kids to attend? You idiots love to spew crap about how your "rights" are being "infringed" upon but could care less about matters that are important to anyone else. Maybe I'm just a little tired of listening to the Democrat agenda and want to see some changes that allow for the individual to make some decisions for themselves instead of being dictated to by Big Brother. Your time has passed.

Blah, blah, blah, more legislation they won't even enforce. Kinda like all those new gun laws that have actually been used 3 times in the last 3 years. :p

And another thing, I wouldn't worry about "+ Extra time/fine". The wonderful Lawyer supported special interest groups will make sure that those defense attorneys will have all the help they need to get criminals back out on the streets as soon as possible. You love those mostly Democrat special interest groups don't you? They make the Religious Right look like liberators.

BTW, being an ass is better than being a worthless Socialist dirtbag. Which is a title you wear very well.

Really? I am positive my positions on things are far more libertarian than yours and prolly more "right" than you, its just I beleive in a seperation of church and state. PERIOD, don't go spouting off about shlt you don't know anything about, socialist my ass. In regards to the "Hate crime" bill, it makes a hell of alot more sense than idiots like you make it out to be.

How about this retard,

Bush never said anything about outlawing abortion. Never said anyting about "group prayer", or anything of the sort. You're so d@mned ignorant. Why don't you actually pay attention to what's around you instead of following the Democrat party line?

Libertarian? You? HAHAHA!!

You're such a pathetic boot-licker. You don't even see how our taxes have gotten out of control? There's a reason why Socialist governments fail, noone's allowed to succeed except for the scum that refuses to do anything.

We started a Revolution over taxes that weren't even close to the percentages we pay now... if it keeps going the way it's been there'll be another in the next 50 years. I'd die for what I believe in, you'd simply lie and cry.

Ashcroft will confirmed without too much ado. He's pulled a few stunts in the Senate that haven't gone over well with many Democrats, but the Senate is like an exclusive country club. They will take care of one of their own.

Other than that, the man should be anathema to every True American. :p

But, I am so sick of political threads....

I think I blew a circuit breaker during the election.

When did you (or your party) Start this revolution? 1960? Lets see, the maximum income tax rate in 1960 was just about or over 90%, so your little Taxation revolution started when? As for "I'd die for what I believe", one can only hope, and as far as "lie and cry", yeah right, you talk tough.....
Enforcing Laws? Maybe thats where we can agree on something, although there is very little to explain when I already laid out the grounds of what a hate crime bill would do. You whine and complian about "could care less about matters that are important to anyone else.[/i] >>

Ow, oh, awww, Shux. You're so cruel... boo hoo. You nasty venomous little maggot. hahaha Was that your best? You pitiful little wretch. Of course there's nothing you'd die for. Nothing you hold so dear as to risk your worthless hide, for the world itself is not so valuable to you as yourself.

<< When did you (or your party) Start this revolution? 1960? Lets see, the maximum income tax rate in 1960 was just about or over 90%, so your little Taxation revolution started when? >>

90%? For whom pray tell? Not for the middle class and those are the people that are getting fed up with all this. How far do you think your socialist agendas will get when we have our next Depression (and we will)?

<< Face it, you have no agenda other than your own selfish and small minded opinion. >>

Oh, I'm far from selfish. I want everyone to have the right to choose what they do with their money and the right for all people to be able to succeed without harsh tax penalties. Ask Russ how hard it is to run your own business and how rough the taxes are on the self-employed. Don't you see how important that freedom is to many? No, you just want everyone to have the same large portion of mediocrity. The same worthless, bloated programs that serve noone, but the government that wants to keep people asleep. You'd never understand what it's like to be fully self-reliant, and you probably couldn't go take a dump without asking Big Bro where it would be "enivronmentally sound".

You Libs just don't see, the Gov is our employee. They work for us, but just like a bad cashier they've always got their hands in the till.

And for the record (not that I care what you think about this)...

I'm:
Pro-Choice (until the end of 1st trimester)
Anti-Mandatory School Prayer (voluntary is ok as long as it's not led by a school official)
Anti-Censorship of any kind (do you have a copy of Mein Kompf in your library? I do.)
Anti-PC (Correct is just that. When you add Political to it you make it Incorrect).

Wake up and pay attention. You may have never served a day in the military to defend the freedom we have, but you sure as hell could at least appreciate it a bit.
