Colts had the ball/1 point lead. All they had to do was take a knee and let the game end.

After he took a knee then tossed the ref the ball, with 20 seconds left on the game clock Peyton took off his helmet and started shaking hands on the field.

So why isn't this a penalty? Just understood by the refs that it's OK to do? I thought anytime you removed your helmet on the field it was a penalty?

-edit-
oh, and first NFL team to start 9-0 back to back.

As you stated, game was over when he took the knee. No reason to throw a flag. Additionally, this situation happens quite often when teams are running out the clock.

The game was over, what's the big deal?

Should refs start penalizing teams when their players start walking onto the field at the end of a game before time has officially expired?

oh no, I don't think they should start doing that. Just curious if technically the referee "could"

Of course he could but what purpose does it serve? He loses 15yds..big whoop the game is over anyway.

If they wanted to be jackasses then yes, they could.

It's like in basketball when the game is over in the closing seconds and a guy walks with the ball but doesn't get called for traveling.

Didn't a Browns player remove their helmet at the end of the game & it was called a penalty & they eventually lost on the next play.

I remember that. some kind of penalty was called and the kicker took off his helmet moving them too far out of range.

but I guess the consensus is sure it's a penalty. But it isn't called.

Is it supposed to wear his whole uniform home?

Refs are bad they when it comes to penalties like that, that's why they call it the No Fun League. College football is even worse in that category.

game cant end of a defensive penalty, but in this case peyton was obviously on the offensive team, the game can end on an offensive penalty so there is no point in calling that.

that now makes perfect sense. thanks.

There's no need to call it because it would NOT affect the outcome of the game. It's just an understanding the the game is over, even though technically it isn't (game clock)

If they call an offensive penalty, no big deal...the clock just runs out anyway.

The Browns player (Dwyane Rudd) did it during the play. So it was a 15 yd penalty that put the opposing team into field goal range. IIRC, Rudd thought he sacked the QB, but the QB shoveled it to a player as he was going down. Then Rudd ripped off his helmet in celebration thinking the game was over, but the play was going on. So it was a 15 yd penalty and the other team got a chance to kick the winning FG.

thanks for the clarification izzo. I remeber that now.

So, removing the helmet during play is an instant penalty...removing it after the whistle is blown is OK?

Actually, after reading up on it on Wiki, I like the "defensive penalties don't end the game" explanation better. At first I was thinking that it was a fourth down play, so the fact that Rudd threw it during the play was important. (Because if it was after the play, there would be a penalty, but the Browns would retain posession.) But it sounds like the player that was shoveled the ball rumbled all the way to the 25 yard line. So the important part is that the game can't end on a defensive penalty.

I still think it's always a penalty if you remove it while still on the field. But I think the refs in Manning's case understood the game was over and it wasn't in a taunting manner.

I thought he removed it after the play was over, but I'm not sure. I know injured players are not allowed to remove their helmets even after the play is over.
