So we're looking for a new car, and we have pretty much narrowed it down to two choices, the Peugeot 207 and the Suzuki Swift GLX. Both are small 4-door hatchbacks, the 207 is 1.6L and the Swift is 1.4L.

Pros about the Swift:
It's a manual
It's got the indicators on the right hand side (yes, this is a big deal, since the stick is on the left hand side)
It feels pretty good to drive

Cons about the Swift:
My parents think it looks butt ugly

Pros about the 207:
"It's a European car"
It feels pretty good to drive (I didn't drive either enough to differentiate between the Swift and the 207, but in the 10-15 minutes I got with each both felt comfortable enough).

Cons about the 207:
It's automatic with tiptronic, which feels absolutely shit.
It's got the indicators on the left hand side
I think it looks butt ugly (to be honest, looks don't really matter to me, since I'm not going to be staring at it while I'm driving).

Both are around $20,000, both are demonstrators (<100km on each), etc. The Swift would be around $500 cheaper and it comes with $2,500 of diamond jewellery, but that's not really of that much value to us. Bundled warranty, WoF, servicing etc. are pretty similar. Both seem fairly roomy on the inside, my dad is about average height and he said there was plenty of room for him inside both.

We'll be using it for a city/highway driving mix, about half-half, with a couple of long-ish journeys a year (6-800km per trip). It'll get used practically every day. Fuel economy is a biggie for me, since petrol is getting so expensive and I'm just going to be using it more and more as time goes on.

Which should we choose? My parents seem to think that being European, the 207 is the clear winner. I reckon that the Swift is more comfortable to drive with the manual and stuff, and the car itself has more features in terms of on-board dash and other stuff.

Dacia Sandero.

(...I don't think many people here are going to have much useful input given the difference in car markets.)

edit: although I can bet no one is going to recommend a Suzuki based on what we've seen of the North American models. Japanese > Korean > Suzuki. And yes, I know Suzuki is Japanese, but they, um, play by their own rules.

However, the Swift is one of the best sub compacts on the market. I wish I even had that choice here.

Yeah, no Dacia Sandero here. Is it actually a good car?

I talked to a few more friends, and given how I'm going to be cash strapped for the foreseeable future, they reckoned the Swift was a better bet.

But they also said the Swift was a really good car. What kind of things happened to the US Swifts?

At the time it was sold fuel economy was not a priority and small cars were perceived to be "toys". I don't know if there was anything particularly wrong with the Swift back then other than the market not demanding them. Now days small cars are popular due to fuel costs but of course we don't get the Swift. The only reason I know about it is from watching Fifth Gear.

Some magazine said the Swift was really good. It's a nice clean looking car. How could your parents think it's ugly?

Heh, we don't get the Dacia Sandero...it's just a well-known car because of Top Gear. We don't get the Swift, either. I'm assuming by NutBucket's comments that we did at one time, but I've definitely never seen the current gen offered in North America. Either they think they don't have the market, or maybe it's just cost-prohibitive to import from where they're made (Hungary, I think?). Shame, really- if they went Fiat's route and did some marketing, as well as having a way cheaper subcompact (would be the least expensive subcompact here, I think), I could see it being successful.

Instead, we get the compact (I think- seems Corolla-sized) SX4. Which I guess is not TOO bad a car, but it's no cheaper than it's Asian competitors, who generally have a better reputation and their cars score better in 'Consumer Reports' and those type of rags.

A big issue for Suzuki right now is probably that people know they're failing (in this market), so it seems like a scary proposition to buy their cars at this point...kind of a perpetual downward spiral for them, it seems. Fear of their failure making them fail...
