For the first time in eons, the Lions are a very exciting and competitive team, which means that football fans around the country will not be scheduling their post-Tryptophan naps to coincide with the appearance of Ford Field's home team. It's a marquee game for once, so you'd think that a tribute to some tough Detroit rock would be in order.
Nope. Instead, the league has presented us with halftime entertainment in the form of the inexplicably popular proto-generic post-grunge band Nickelback. That's right -- these seventh-generation Pearl Jammers are set to whine and squall at halftime of the Lions' game against the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day, and the city of Detroit is not at all happy about it.

I don't understand. It's not like they're any worse than the other bands that have played.

Then again, I don't remember ever caring about halftime. It's the game I'm interested in.

Football has a halftime show? With so many breaks I thought it was just another commercial timeout. :)

Can't say I have every seen a good halftime show. Even the blackpeas during the super bowl were terrible. Guess thats why I usually change the channel.

This. I don't get all the Nickelback hate. They're an unimaginative, uninspired, unoriginal "rock" band...just like 90% of the other bands in existence.

I saw Nickelback twice in concert. Once when the opened up for another band I was seeing and once because I liked a chick who wanted to see another band with me and they opened for Nickelback.

Not bad in concert, they had a lot of energy. But I agree that their music is really bland and unoriginal sounding. The mashups of their songs overlapping perfectly is always good for a chuckle.

Just to clarify for some: this is the Detroit Thanksgiving day game--not the Superbowl. (not that the Superbowl will be any better...)

Anyway, imagine if this were in Philly. The city and fans would have no petition, but they'd sure as shit have other plans for when Nickleback takes the stage.

seeing as i never listened to nickelback all that much, i really don't find them to be that bad. they're not that great either, but i enjoy a few of their songs every once in a while.

The reason Nickelback inspires such rage isn't that they're a shitty band. There are countless bands today that are just as shitty.

They get so much hate because so many fucking people in this idiotic country don't realize how shitty they are.

It's the same reason people rant about McDonalds
