I think we have a great variety of avatars available, but the more the better. Custom avatars will not happen, abuse would be rampant, and moderation would be very difficult.

Yup, I think it's a good idea too, but the man power it would take to approve and/or moderate the avatars would just be too much. A few people would abuse it....and once again the few ruin it for the many.
