Petition Calls For International Harry Potter Day!

Mar 1, 2007 1:41 pm

As we all know the end is near for the adventures of Harry Potter, his pals and enemies. Now there's a move afoot to create a day to honor Harry called ... International Harry Potter Day.

The Web site to gather signatures is up and running. Tommy, who is about to graduate
from college in Utah, put together http://www.harrypotterholiday.com/

His goal is to gather a million signatures by the time the time "Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows" is released on July 21.

In his explanation he writes that once he receives 10,000 signatures from any country, he will forward the petition to that nation's leaders.

Once you sign up and your email is confirmed, Tommy gives you a personal pixel so you can be part of a mural celebrating the success of Harry Potter.

You even have a chance to write a message about Harry Potter Day. Shalon, for instance, wrote "Harry Potter is too big to not have a holiday."

Sarah wrote "I love Harry Potter and feel that a Harry Potter holiday would be a great way to remember Harry Potter long after the final book is released."

So when would International Harry Potter Day be celebrated? One obvious choice would be Harry's birthday in July.

But one petition signer raises an excellent date. "I think it should be like Nov. 1, though, because that's the day everything changed for Harry," writes Jessica.

"His parent's were killed Halloween night and so early on Nov. 1st was when the first book opened, and it was the night of the 1st when Harry was brought to the Dursley's house, and McGonagall said 'I wouldn't be surprised if today was known as Harry Potter Day in the future.' How totally fitting is that???"

And why not have a Harry Potter Day? It could be larger than just Harry. It could be a celebration of literacy around the world, a chance to pause and remember just how much the right book can catch a child's imagination and encourage them to read.

That's more than a celebration of a single character and a single series or even a single author's success. That's a celebration of reading and the worlds it opens.

- Filed by Raetta, yes, I signed the petition, Holdman"

We do? I have no idea what is happening in the world of Harry Potter. I've never read any of the books and couldn't care less. Why would the writer of this article assume that anyone over the age of 9 gives a sh!t?

And no, a holiday in his honour is just stupid. We don't even have a day in honour of Einstein FFS.

Where is the option, "I like the series, but would laugh uncontrollably at the ridiculous idea of a holiday for Harry Potter"?.

As ShotgunSteven said, it would be fun to see all the squabbling over it. I'll sign the petition. :)
