Peter King, Furious Over Blocked Sandy Aid, Says Don't Donate To House Republicans

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) is going after his fellow House Republicans after party leaders pulled a Hurricane Sandy relief bill from a floor vote on Tuesday, saying that New York and New Jersey residents should stop giving these lawmakers political contributions.

"I'm saying right now, anyone from New York or New Jersey who contributes one penny to congressional Republicans is out of their minds," he said in an interview on Fox News. "Because what they did last night was put a knife in the back of New Yorkers and New Jerseyans. It was an absolute disgrace."

The House adjourned on Tuesday night without passing the $60.4 billion Sandy relief package that the Senate approved last week. The 113th Congress will be sworn in on Thursday, meaning that the House and Senate would have to restart the entire legislative process if it takes it up.

House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) told CNN that money will be approved in the next Congress.

"FEMA has plenty of money, there's no immediate needs," he said, referring to the federal agency that distributes disaster relief.

* * *

In a CNN interview Wednesday morning, King criticized Rogers for his comment.

"First, he doesn't know what he's talking about," said King on CNN. "Besides that, Hal Rogers has no problem coming to New York and raising money to put money in his pocket when he wants to raise it from New Yorkers. Secondly, the FEMA money was limited to $31,000 [for individuals]. That's not going to rebuild businesses."

"Hal Rogers can play his game. He can suck up to the Republican speaker if he wants to, but ... stay out of New York. Raise your money down in Kentucky," he added.

* * *

I thought this was interesting stuff, and demonstrative of the ongoing implosion of the House GOP caucus. Obviously King has a bias here, in that he is trying to get money for his own state, but given that Boehner needlessly delayed bringing the House GOP caucus back to DC last week, and repeatedly promised to get Sandy assistance in place, I don't blame King for being upset. Very interesting times for the GOP . . .

I don't know if I'd read more into it than the already well established fact Peter King is a loose cannon. I will admit this is less crazy than a lot of the stuff he frequently spouts.

Why is the dem controlled senate not, partially, culpable for loading up the bill with unrelated pork?

Considering that the Dems have busted our economy in NY I have no reason to vote for them either. People who can't get welfare are having their nuts twisted off unless you are really wealthy.

Frankly they all suck, Sandy or no.

It was a bipartisan bill. If the House didn't like it they could have come up with their own - instead they did nothing.

By the way, congrats on being quoted by an ALTroll (not that that is your fault).

I don't really blame the house leaders on this one. If they had passed their own bill, emperor Palpatine (Harry Reid) would have stalled it in the Senate and blamed the house for handing him another 'no starter' of a bill. As it was, he got a bill passed that he knew the house would reject due to the pork. It was a win-win for the dems. It's all a bloody game and we're the loser - again.

To make an omelette of tax increases on the wealthy, I guess you need to break a few eggs. BTW, this shafting couldn't have happened to better people.

I notice you needed speculation in order to refute reality.

No speculation at all, just going on past experience with Palpatine.

And I see you evaded the issue of your beloved dems loading up the senate bill with pork.

I bolded some key words for you so you can spot speculation more easily in the future:

As for your pork accusation, I have not read the bill, so I don't know what pork is in it. Have you read the bill? Can you quote some of the portions that you classify as pork? What? No? You mean you read somewhere that there is pork in it but didn't actually read the bill itself?

Christie: House Inaction On Sandy Aid ‘Inexcusable’
January 2, 2013 2:35 PM

NEWARK, N.J. (CBS/AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is fuming over the House’s decision to not hold a vote on Superstorm Sandy relief package.

Speaking at a news conference Wednesday afternoon, the Republican governor said the only group to blame for decision is the House’s GOP majority and Speaker John Boehner.

Christie said he tried calling Speaker John Boehner four times Tuesday night, but Christie said Boehner didn’t take his call.

Christie says the storm aid measure is not something you “play politics with” when people are suffering. Christie said “our people were played last night as a pawn. And that’s why people hate Washington D.C.”

* * *

The Senate approved a $60.4 billion measure Friday to help with recovery from the storm that devastated parts of New York, New Jersey and nearby states.

The House Appropriations Committee has drafted a smaller, $27 billion measure, and a vote had been expected before Congress’ term ends Thursday at noon. An amendment for $33 billion in additional aid, partly to protect against future storms, was also being considered.

* * *

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., called it a “cruel knife in the back” to New York and New Jersey. He said some Republicans have a double standard when it comes to providing aid to New York and New Jersey compared with other regions of the country suffering disasters. Somehow, he said, money going to New York and New Jersey is seen as “corrupt.”

He said those same Republicans have no trouble coming to New York and New Jersey to raise millions of dollars. King urged donors from the two states not to give money to Republicans who are ignoring their needs on Sandy.

* * *

New York and New Jersey lawmakers said they believed they had support for both measures.

“I am convinced it would have passed,” said Rep. Frank LoBiiondo, R-N.J., who represents Atlantic City which was hard hit LoBiondo said New York and New Jersey lawmakers have backed past disaster aid bills for other states.

“Now when it comes to us, we have a lot of hemming and hawing,” LoBiondo said.

The lawmakers had erupted in anger late Tuesday night after learning the House Republican leadership decided to allow the current term of Congress to end without holding a vote on aid for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

King said Tuesday night he was told by the office of Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia that Boehner had decided to abandon a vote this session.

Cantor, who sets the House schedule, did not immediately comment. New York and New Jersey GOP lawmakers were hoping to meet with Cantor and Boehner on Wednesday.

This post is both speculative and needlessly snarky ("Emperor Palpatine"? What are you, 12?). Certainly at least some House Republicans thought the House proposal for Sandy relief would pass if put to a vote - see my post above this one.

Boehner is Speaker of the House.
Boehner supported fiscal cliff bill from Senate.
Cantor is Majority Leader.
Cantor supported Sandy Relief.
Cantor embarrasses Boehner by opposing fiscal cliff deal and takes over 150 Republican votes with him.
Boehner yanks Sandy Relief bill from the floor.

Truly truly disgusting on the part of the Speaker. Delaying aid to homeless victims of Sandy and delaying the economic rebuilding of New Jersey and New York to spite another member.

I'm having a hard time believing Eric "let's withhold Joplin disaster relief until we find cuts to offset it" Cantor was being all that helpful here. I know that's what King, Christie, and Schumer have all said but... it's Eric Cantor. He has some angle and it's not helping disaster victims. Boehner might be an asshole, but I don't think he is petty enough and stupid enough to bring about this sort of blowback just from personal spite.

Me too... We just gotta keep feeding the rope... Pretty soon they will be hanging from it. But, well, it still won't do much good as the dems are just as bad ... What the people must believe is the two party system is tanked and needs to be rebooted! It along with all their friends and lobbyist.

But that won't happen since "The People" are still too stupid!

As I said, I'm basing my 'speculation' on past experience with Reid. And I think the comparison to Palpatine is appropriate. He has the mannerisms down pat.

My snarkyness is out of general disgust with the gamesmanship in DC. None of them give a rip about you, me, or the vast majority of us. It's all about power and their own greed. Maybe it is total speculation on my part, but it's not without some basis on past performance, as I said. The partisan hatred in DC is so strong that I see no reason why Reid wouldn't screw the relief bill if he could blame reps for it.

Maybe Boehner really is just starting to crack.

"I was chasing the Speaker all over the House floor last night, trying to talk to him and his staff," King said on CNN on Wednesday morning. "He kept telling me, wait until the vote is over, wait until the fiscal cliff vote is over, everything will be taken care of. And then he was gone. He refused to meet with us. He actually yelled at Congressman LoBiondo, saying, 'I'm not meeting with you people.'"

LoBiondo spokesman Jason Galanes confirmed that King's account was "accurate."

The House could have passed their own bill, they chose to do nothing.

The House could have amended the Senate bill, they chose to do nothing.

The House could have voted on the Senate bill and rejected it due to its terms, they chose to do nothing.

The decision to not create their own bill, amend the Senate's bill, or vote on the Senate's bill as is was entirely the House's fault.
