Pete Carroll, the Rose Bowl, Willis McGahee, and Class

I suppose the Longhorns have not just the teflon-coated arms of the USC defense to thank for their win. With the Heisman and a place as the #1 pick locked up, it was the spector of Willis McGahee haunting Pete Carroll that kept Reggie Bush on the sidelines on 4th and 1 and countless other running situations. It seems Pete, over the past few weeks, has been in deep contemplation over the true importance of an NCAA national title. Is it worth risking a potentially brilliant pro career and financial security for his star player? To win a college championship?

For 92.5% of the seniors on both USC and Texas, this will be the last organized football game they ever play in their lives. In 10 years they'll be insurance agents and recreational therapists and accountants and if they're still looking back on a championship victory as the highlight of their life then something is very wrong. As Mack Brown the coach of Texas stated.

I told them tonight as I told them Monday, I don't want this to be the biggest thing that ever happens in their lives. It may be the best sporting event in your life, and for some of them it will be for sure. But I want this to help them carry confidence later in life. "

Well stated, Mack. And well played Pete Carroll for not just saying that, but showing it. By limiting Reggie Bush's touches, he put an overlooked star running back in Lendale White into the spotlight and very likely significantly boosted his status in the eyes of recruits. He also gave Matt Leinart and the receiving corp their chances to show their stuff to a nationwide audience expecting the Reggie Bush Extravaganza. Not that Mack doesn't care about Vince Young, but Vince needed something more than either a championship or healthy stroll to draft day..........respect. He got it, but not in the way he needed it. To Joe and Jane Housewife he looks like the obvious new #1 draft pick. But displaying his typical lackluster passing ability and resorting to exploiting the half step he has on most defensive players--a half step that will instantly disappear upon entrance to the NFL--got him the championship and minor stardome with the laymen but it still won't get him out of the late first round.

Carroll didn't just roll over for Texas, USC had several easy chances to win the game even without their star but gave it to Texas. USC with 4th and 1 and the game on the line chooses not to go with the well-rested Bush. With Texas on the USC 10 on 4th and 5, after two consecutive inaccurate passes, who in the world was expecting anything but a Vince Young keeper? Apparently USC.

So now the USC excuse is going to be that they were saving Bush for the NFL?

You know, I don't know about late first round. The saints need a playmaking quarterback like vince young. Oh and remember he was 13-15 passing in the first half. Efficiency is golden. He is a bigger, stronger, more mindful micheal vick. He will make some team very happy if he decides to leave for the monetary promise land called the NFL. Oh, and I see him selling just as many Jerseys and on even more Nike Ads than Reggie Bush.

They didn't want to win. Losing makes them classy. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Whatever makes you feel better.

SC fanboys are still #1 when it comes to whining and making excuses. ;)

I was expecting a Bush/Lienart all out extravaganzza. I knew it wouldn't be a cakewalk though. That being said, it was a VERY close game that easily could of went either way. Bush didn't play up to his usual level, and Vince Young had a SPECTACULAR night. I truly never thought he could carry the team by himself. He was the Texas offense. Period.

No excuses, USC choked, and Texas held strong. Great game in the second half (both teams were a tad rusty in the first half).

Texas prepared for the slash & burn of Bush and relegated him to a minor role. The straight ahead running style of White made him a better choice for the defense Texas was using.

True. They had an answer for Reggie, ans SC looked like they had never seen tape of VY. I would have thought they would have been a bit better prepared.....

Amen to that, win or lose nothing will keep them from trying to convince us that they are the best team. And I can't wait to see them lose a couple games next year just to eek into the Outback Bowl or something like that and having to formulate another excuse along the lines of "Just wait until we get Casey Klausen, we'll win 4 more Championships!"

yea...you would think so. they maybe should have tried the 'spy on vince' defense that ohio statue used earlier in the year. basically they just had aj hawk stand and focus on vince until he committed on the zone read

Texas held him to a minor role by preparation and the majority of those kids will not play a down in the NFL. Bush will be relegated to a role-player in an NFL offense...if he makes it past his first season. He'll pull some stupid showboat flip into the endzone and get destroyed the next time he takes the field.

QFT. I can't see why Bush can't become the next, more elusive, Marshall Faulk.

vince is deceptively quick and elusive...there's a reason people miss tackles on him all the time...just like there's a reason people miss tackles on reggie all the time - his speed does nto allow for arm tackles

This Willis McGahee fellow ... I feel bad for him (whoever he is), and would like to start a Paypal donation to make his life a little better. Its more important to think of what you can do for your fellow man in desperate need of some help, be it financial or maybe just put some clothes on his back, or feed him if he is hungry.

Fellow AT: OT posters, can we help a guy out here ?? I hope he doesn't have to rely on advice from Pete Carroll as well !!

Where's the sarcasm emoticon, by the way ??

Aww c'mon monk3y, didn't you sense my sarcasm in that post ?? I know very well the McGahee story, but found it funny to act like he was in desperate straits now .. the guys got a nice fat contract so I wish him continued success in the NFL.

McGahee is actually doing fine for himself. After a year off he's now a starting RB in the NFL.

I agree, but that's at the college level. Reggie Bush averages 10 yards per carry....if he got half that in the NFL he'd be a spectacular superstar running back.

Vince Young's problem is that he won't have that half step and strength advantage on other guys in the NFL. Most of his runs yesterday would have been 3 yard gains (the point at which the first USC defender typically let him slide through their arms) against even the worst NFL defense.

And I don't care about college football--I root for the Sac State Hornets :), but Carroll's move surprised me and got me thinking about the nature of college football and it's true roll and, of course, I had to throw in some quick assessment of the game and players while I was sharing those thoughts.

USC and Classy? Someone forgot to tell Leinart.

And I think part of the reason for Bush's limited action was a result of his bonehead lateral.

Carroll and classy...not USC...and certainly not Leinart. He was acting like a brat the entire game after he tossed the INT and gave a fairly ingracious interview. I heard Bush went into the Texas lockerroom to congratulate some of their guys....but I suppose that's easy to do when you're going to be a multimillionaire and the talk of the football world for the entire next year.
