Pet turtles...

I just got an aquarium for a friend's pet turtle... It's sleeping but in the water. I was just wondering if anyone has pet turtles... do they have the ability to sleep under water? There is land in the aquarium and water but the turtle keeps going to the water. Any help will be appreciated. Tnx.

I'm not the turtle expert (snakes is my thing) but I know a little bit.

It's very important to have both land and enough water for the turtle to choose from. It will stay in the water when it wants to. Same for land.

They feel safer under water, can sleep under water for more than an hour before coming up for air.

As long as the tank is clean (clean water is important) and he has land or a floating object it can climb onto, it is just fine. 🙂 Oh..make sure that on the land, there is a bowl of clean drinking water. Change it out every few days. 🙂

Is it a Red Earred Slider? We have 3 of these and to properly care for them you need to have a basking area for them to climb up on with a basking lamp shining down on it. They mostly hang around in the water but will spend an hour or 2 soaking up heat under the basking lamp. I'll edit this with some pics of our setup in a couple.

Yeah i'm pretty sure it's a red eared slider... Thanks alot for the info so far guys. I think everything is set up fine.

Yeah, my turtle sleeps under the water sometimes. The first couple of times I was scared, but she survived, so now I just let her sleep wherever she wants.

Here is Turtell. Only had him for a few months but hes doing well! He started out sleeping underwater a lot, but now usually sleeps on his log or on his friend Mr. Snail. He also snacks on Mr. Snail sometimes 😱. But they are friends nevertheless.
