Say you live on a farm and have a dog you've treated well and loved for 16 years, however the dog has some serious medical problems and has to be put down.

Is it legal to just take it outside and shoot it in the head?

can you? yes. should you? well thats a diffrent question.

Personally i would pay the vet. that way i know it was painless and fast.

shooting it could make it suffer for a short time. not worth it to me.

Yes, it is perfectly legal... And I sorry for your (future?) loss.

They (whoever they might be) would have to prove it was done out of cruelty or negligence for it to be illegal.

Yes. Hell, if I were a dog, I'd rather die out in a pretty green field than in a sterile, depressing vet's office with someone sticking needles in me... As long as you're humane and a good shot, I see no problem.

EDIT: But I can't imagine how hard it would be to actually do it. If someone came into my house, I'd have no problem shooting him/her. But to look into the eyes of your pal and pull the trigger would be really hard, even if it was the right thing to do... but I guess taking it to the vet to have it put down would be hard too. :(

Thanks for the sympathy, but I'm not a pet owner, the question just popped into my head because I saw Old Yeller on the channel guide.

Since you plan to kill it anyway, you should feed it baking soda and vinegar so we can figure out if the stories are true.

Is it legal, yes. Should you, No! Here's why, what if you shoot, and it's not a fatal hit, the animal runs off, and suffers while you try and track it down. Now your act is no longer humane, despite your intentions. I'd spend the $30-$50 and have a vet do it.

That's my city slicker point of view.

Depends what you shoot it with. If you shoot a dog in the head with a .45, it will be quick and painless. Just make sure you don't miss. However, if the shooter was to miss, I agree that it would be a sh!tty way for the dog to go. :(

Is it legal? NO. (If you're in New York) In fact, it's felony offense in NY.

So, the legality of it depends on your jurisdiction.

edit: and since your profile is hidden, I can't see where you're at. I don't think NY is alone in this though. (And, I don't agree that the law is right.)
