http://www.menufoods.com/recall/

As many as one in six animals died in tests of suspect dog and cat food by the manufacturer last month after complaints the products were poisoning pets around the country, the government said Monday.

This company is probably going to get a quick understanding of just what it means to have your arse sued off. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=070323160755.ayf41dzr&show_article=1

If its true they knew something was up, just why did they switch suppliers before the recall, they are going to have a hard time in court keeping their money.

The real Question Is how much of this Chinese Wheat Was Possible Used to make, Lets say Pasta.

Americans should really start Caring where their food Supply comes from.

I knew something much bigger was up, when on the website the lists keeps growing and growing. Yesterday brand x was not listed, today it is. So what about tomorrow?

I used the Authority brand listed, but the dates were not the same. Recalled dates were 2010, mine all were 2009 on the can. But... knowing how this usually goes, I took all the cans back and switched back to Science Diet.

I'd bet tomorrow, dates 2009 are included, even though today they say that date is safe...

And, finding the rat poison tells me someone with access is tampering. It could be at any stage, an "insider" sick-o. They may never know. And it may happen again.

So how much is the death of a dog/cat worth in a law suit?

The cost of the dog? Twice the cost for pain and suffering? 3-4 for grief etc etc?

And you have to wonder if this company will survive this when the onset of law suits begin.

I think it was an insider rat lover. Look for someone that raised and loved rats. They may think, why kill off nice cute 4 legs two eyed rats with over the counter stuff when dogs and cats get a free ride? Oh, btw, anyone know where Willard works now?

If it had turned out the way they claimed initially, I would have sympathy, but the more that comes out, the more I think this company is probably going down, hard.

As it is, I'm keeping an eye on things day by day, as long as only wet foods are affected, my animals are not, but I'm starting to worry a little!

Wow, 53 brands of dog food and 42 brands of cat food and 60 million cans???

That's a big whoops.
Hm, peachy. Wegmans is on the list. Guess what my cat back home eats.

If they go under, good luck getting pet food. It looks like they make damn near all the pet food out there, including some big ones: Eukanuba, Iams, Ol'Roy (Walmart's dog food brand), Special Kitty (Walmart's cat food brand), Wegmans, Weis, Mighty Dog...crazy.
I don't see Friskies on there though.

Agreed!

The fact that one company produces 53 different brands of cat & dog food shows how actual competition in our so-called free enterprise system is illusory smoke and mirrors, at best.

If they identify the exact people who knew about this and did nothing for profit---a law suit may be the least of their worries---I know quite a few pet owners who would cheerfully kill the offending human that poisoned their beloved pet if they caught them in the act---or even after the fact.

If I were these people---I would start wondering about my possibly limited life expectancy.---and start posting armed guards---and not risking showing themselves in public.

The factory I work at exclusively makes the cans for Menu Foods; I am thoroughly interested to see how this plays out. I am VERY thankful the recall had nothing to do with the packaging! Menu has not told us what the volumes will be like going forward (either we will make a ton more to compensate for the recall or the company will go broke/lose loyal customers).

Could have made 30% investing in the stock on Friday though!! 🙂

That's about the truth there. Alot of pet owners are quite fanatic about them; and in many cases with good reason. Many pet owners consider their pets as their closest friends and companions.
This company really dropped the ball on this one...and I hope they pay dearly (financially and/or jail time).

So do you think it's wrong that GM offers serveral models? Should they only be allowed a few?
The number of brands is a useless statistic; marketshare and pricing should be the only indicator of competition or free market enterprise. Even before this pet food scare, Menu cut its dividend, and had very low margins.

The number of rebanded products is a useful statistic. It makes it impossible for people to vote with there feet as free market people like to say.

A lot more brands of pet food was just added as well as dog biscuits now.

4-5-2007 Wal-Mart dog treats join pet food recall

WASHINGTON - The recall of pet foods and treats contaminated with an industrial chemical expanded Thursday to include dog biscuits made by an Alabama company and sold by Wal-Mart under the Ol'Roy brand.

The Food and Drug Administration said the manufacturer, Sunshine Mills Inc., is recalling dog biscuits made with imported Chinese wheat gluten. Testing has revealed the wheat gluten, a protein source, was contaminated with melamine, used to make plastics and other industrial products.

Also Thursday, Menu Foods, a major manufacturer of brand- and private-label wet pet foods expanded its original recall to include a broader range of dates and varieties.

Menu Foods was the first of at least six companies to recall the now more than 100 brands of pet foods and treats made with the contaminated ingredient.

Sunshine, of Red Bay, Ala., sells pet foods and treats under its own brands as well as private labels sold by grocery, mass merchant and dollar stores, according to its Web site. The recall included some of the products made for sale under five private labels, including Ol'Roy biscuits, sold by Wal-Mart Stores Inc., and Stater Bros. large biscuits, sold by Stater Bros. Markets. It also covered a portion of Sunshine's own Nurture, Lassie and Pet Life dog biscuit brands.

The recall is one of the largest pet food recalls in history

Sunshine Mills said it would post a complete list of the recalled dog biscuits on its Web site, http://www.sunshinemills.com/.

The FDA last week blocked wheat gluten imports from the Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. in the eastern city of Xuzhou China, saying they contained melamine.

A Las Vegas importer, ChemNutra Inc., recalled this week all wheat gluten it had purchased from the supplier and in turn distributed to pet food manufacturers.

Xuzhou Anying has said it is investigating the claims.
