Pet Peeve: Washer and Dryer use

Its always bothered me when people keep their $hit in the washer and dryer after the machine has completed the cycle.

I'm not talking about a few minutes here, but hours and hours after. Its inconsiderate and generally lame that adults cannot remember to remove $hit 45 minutes after they put it in the machine.

Weak rant, I know. Whatever.

putting it on the floor is messed up, but if it's in there for longer than an hour, putting it on a table or something is fair game.

This bothers me too.

Until recently I lived in a building with a total of 18 living units. There were 2 washers and dryers for the entire building. That in of itself was pretty bad, but compounded with people leaving their clothes for hours unattended, made it one of the shittiest places I've ever lived.

Nothing worse than needing to do laundry and not being able to for a few days. (I didn't live anywhere near a laundromat.)

We separate darks into those that need to be hung up immediately after drying and those for which wrinkling wouldn't matter (socks/boxers/pajamas/etc).

With two kids and two parents working, this is a must for us. I've got a load that's been sitting in the dryer since Sunday. Too tired to go fold all those right now...

I waited all day once to do laundry and both washers/dryers were filled with clothes that had been sitting there for at least a day. The table was stacked with other peoples clothes, so the only place to put them was on the floor.

So I did just that, under the table which is the cleanest part of the floor. I came back like an hour later and there was a note taped to the washer - "Dun fuck with my clothes." My laundry was also doused with bleach. Luckily for me it was a small load, but it was all ruined regardless.

Was I wrong for putting his shit on the floor? Maybe, but I don't like the fact that some inconsiderate asshole tied up laundry for entire building for an entire day.

Get a better corporate job so you can own your own place. This is one reason I have never lived in an apartment.

its a 2 story, 2 unit flat, its not like a huge apartment or anything. But there is only one spot in the garage that is suitable for laundry use.

No, but I would have tried as hard as I could to remember the articles of clothing so I could fuck them up later with a nice return note.

I say that if it is sitting in the machine for more than 10 minutes after the load is done, then it is fair game to move. If possible, move it to a clean table or chair, otherwise, place it on top of the machine. If you have to move someone's stuff, even if you don't like it, make sure you sit down in the room to prevent the person from being a bigger asshole and tampering with your clothes.

I used to leave my laundry basket on top of the washer or dryer, so someone could put my clothes in it if they needed to use the machine (I wouldn't leave it there for hours though). This worked until someone swiped it, and it was at a Bible college, no less.

yeah, its annoying to not be able to do laundry when you want.

there are 5 washers & 5 dryers at my complex. Maybe 50 units, so its a decent ratio, but i've still ran into this problem a couple times.

its frustrating, ive made sure to walk down there before toting all my laundry & soap down to only find the machines all have clothes sitting in them.

I have only done this once, and it was after 3 hours, but take the clothes out and put them somewhere clean. I had a hard time bringing myself to touch someone else's clothes, but in the end it was their inconsiderateness not mine that forced me to do so.

And to the people saying "buy a house, etc" (not including those joking with Corporate Thug) stfu and be realistic. Not all of us were stupid enough to fall for an ARM and are saving enough for a 20% down payment by renting so we won't have to pay PMI.

I lived in a building like that, a 1920's brownstone, for almost 6 years, until I bought my house. (I had a front corner 1BR unit on the top floor, and one of two available off-street parking spaces, so I had it made in that place; that's why I stayed so long.)

32 units, 3 washers, 3 dryers. Most were one person efficiency units, so that's not as bad as it sounds. Still, it was occasionally an issue when someone would forget about clothes for a few hours (or days).

I timed the cycles once and just put up a simple little 4x6" note (typed up in Word) on the laundry room door that really seemed to help:

PLEASE MOVE CLOTHES PROMPTLY

WASHERS: 25 Minutes
DRYERS: 45 Minutes

THANK YOU.

That was it. It stayed there for several years, and for all I know, it's still there. Most people got the idea that others may be waiting, and were respectful.

Try it.

I used to go and mark my machine I will use later with a "Out of Order" post it. Same goes for the dryer.

I just take it and put it on top of the machine. I just assumed that was normal etiquette.

For the dryer, if they'd forget, yes, "normal" etiquette--beyond the etiquette of moving it before someone else has to--would be to put it on top of the machine.

But for the washer, because the majority of apartment washers in the USA are top loading, that's usually more difficult. I'd try to avoid that situation. However, if I was forced to move someone else's clothes from the washer, I'd place a clean plastic garbage bag on the (somewhat gross) floor, and place the wet clothes on top of the garbage bag.

I agree with you. I am an asshole sometimes and I leave my crap in there especially if I started a dry cycle at 2am. I'm not coming back at 2:45 or 3am to take my crap out. I'm going to knock out.

Well there was this once where I started my wash at 1am. Someone had their crap in the dryer already and it was DONE. At 2am I came back to do my drying but his stuff was still there so I politely took it out and put it on the table that's CLEAN and designed for you to put stuff there.

I came back at 9am in the morning before class to find my stuff in the trash can. Now that's messed up.

I believe that it if I leave my crap there too long people can move it onto the table. However to get worked up about putting stuff on the table is just going too far. If you don't move your crap out of the dryer, expect it to be moved for you. As long as they don't mess your stuff up or whatever it should be all good.

I've met people who are NICE enough to move my stuff BACK into the dryer or washer depending on where they took it out of.

You were wrong in putting it on the floor. Even if it was the only thing you could do, you should NEVER put someone's crap on the floor. If you're going to do that, at least write a note. If you put it on the table and you got that treatment I would find them and fvck them up. Hell I would go as far as to key their damn car up too. I swore to myself I would find the guy who fvcked my clothes up in the trash can.
