So I was just chatting in a thread... and I received a rude reply that I completely earned..

goes:

Dan said:
posts inappropriate link to gory pic

someone replies:
Ok I think we are losing sight of the purpose of this thread.

So in this case I had it coming... nothing to say about that -- and it's completely warranted.

Rather, this is honestly a prime time example of one of my biggest pet peeves irl -- the passive aggressive put down. Again, as i said, in this case it is deserved.. but I've encountered people in day to day encounters who are both genuine dicks and smart enough to be able to put together the passive aggressive putdown TM.

I ran into this the most while working retail.. sometimes you just get "those" customers. eventually you just deal with it and move on -- but out of everything, that stuff stings. amirite? I'd say it's got a lot harsher sting than getting beat up or verbally abused (someone directly insulting you).

how about everyone else.. agree? disagree?

First, I don't think that reply was a p/a put down. Just an observation, and an attempt to keep things on track. For other situations you have 2 kinds of people. One kind thinks they're being clever by forming a phrase they don't think you understand, but is as transparent as Austrian crystal, and the other is too dumb to realize what they said could be construed as offensive, but is otherwise well meaning. I don't care either way. I hate everyone :^D

yeah, I agree that the comment wasn't meant as an insult.. and that you cant read into comments on a forum.

but, given the context i gave, i thought it provided a very good example of the pa putdown i was describing.. without actually writing a more complete description

the cases you list also leave out the third option -- the folk that are more clever than you, know it and assert some level of dominance over you. essentially, rather than a simple verbal or physical beat down -- it's an intellectual beat down, a beat down of wits. the passive aggressive thing is one example -- and you're right, some people really aren't that witty or are that oblivious -- but i've run into some smart assholes in my time and they're the ones that get under my skin

I fucking hate it when people can't capitalize a sentence properly when they're being passive/aggressive in response to a post. Makes them look dumb. ;)

That was one of the tamest things I've ever read from the internet. My sweet old grandma has a meaner streak to her than that. How could you possibly get annoyed by such a thing OP? It wasn't passive agressive... it wasn't even a put down... get over it.

Ok I think we are losing sight of the purpose of this thread.

how is that in any way rude or a put down? unless the pic is of someone with their eyes ripped out or something i don't get it.

Passive Aggressive would have been more like, "I guess this is the gory pic thread now. I should post pics of my bleeding anus."

OP needs to read more and develop a better vocabulary. Might help him understand the meaning of the words, passive, aggressive, putdown and of course the term they represent when put together. Clearly from the above, he understands none of them...

OP, It's cute how you think you're intelligent enough to put abstract ideas into words.

but, given the context i gave, i thought it provided a very good example of the pa putdown i was describing.. without actually writing a more complete description

There's a much better one that I came up with in less than a minute. Your example was dumb.

And, I believe that you are trying to describe a 'backhanded compliment.'

Confronting passive aggressive people is the greatest thing in the world. They prefer to be all sneaky about their opinions when it is still as obvious as directly confronting you. It's so much fun to call them out.

Call out passive aggressive people ya dimwit. Your missing out. If you know whats going on then be blunt about it. You can put people like that on their backs in shock during an argument if you are correct.

Not a good example. I agree with you, but the example sucks.

Good example:

A parent is waiting in line at the store, ready to check out. Their children are being loud and obnoxious. Customer behind parent says, loud enough for parent to hear but to no one in particular, "God! I wish terrible parents who can't control their own children would stay home."

It is a put down, and it is passive aggressive because it is indirect. People do this type of stuff a lot and always look like little beaten dogs when confronted directly. It is a personality trait that is NEVER a good thing.
