OK, it may seem stoopid, but it annoys me to end that many video card makers continue to use the 1280x1024 screen resolution and don't include a 1280x960 resolution. Why? See below of the resolutions and their aspect ratio.

640x480 - 4:3
800x600 - 4:3
1024x768 - 4:3
1152x864 - 4:3
1280x960 - 4:3
1280x1024 - 5:4
1400x1050 - 4:3
1600x1200 - 4:3

Dimensions of a monitor - 4:3

Given that so many people now have 19" monitors, I think the 1280x960 resolution should be standard on all cards, because it's much more accurate than the 1280x1024 resolution for pictures.

Yes I agree but I have been using 1280x1024 for so long now that when I use a 4:3 ratio resolution it looks WRONG :)

I can use either but I dont really see a difference so I use 1024 due to the bigger numbers :)

I use 1280x1024 all the time... lucky for me I can use whatever resolution I want with my Matrox G400. I can just write in any numbers and use that

The higher resolution is slightly better quality in terms of screen resolution and I was using that for a while, until I bought a digital camera. I then started editing a fair number of pictures in PhotoShop, and they would always look distorted with the 1280x1024 screen size (for obvious reasons). I switched to 1280x960 (Voodoo 3) and everything was fine. Now when I see anything at 1280x1024, it just looks plain wrong compared to 1280x960 or 1024x768... because it IS wrong.

Ever since I got a 21inch monitor 1280X1024 was the res that seemed perfect for my desktop.

i am with you 1000%... what the hell made these people change from the god ole 4:3 ratio!!!! makes me mad too!! i use 1280x960 myself, on a 19" monitor... im so glad that my gladiac supports it in 32 bit color!!! i think my voopoo3 did it but only in 16 bit color.. i know some cords dont even offer 1280x960 at all... whos big idea was this 1280x1024 anyway!!

thans for the post... i been wanting to rant about that myself!!!

I'm with you Eug!

16:9 for widescreen movies, 4:3 otherwise. This 5:4 is BS...I can't stand 1280x1024...1280x960 is good though.

1280x1024 Here and i love it. I could care less about the aspect ratio since i dont watch DVD's or anything on my PC. As long as it looks good and i have a hell of a lot of room on my desktop to use them im ok.

nvidia allows it, but i wish they allowed 1400x1050, theres a huge gap between 1280x960 to 1600x1200.

voodoo3 does 2d in 32-bit color. its only 3d that it outputs 16 bit color. the 3d rendering core and 2d rendering core are completely different parts of the chip, and pretty much have nothing to do with each other.

I use 1280x1024 also. Im kinda pissed my TNT2U does not supports 1400x1050. I would use that res on my 19". 1600x1200 is too small on a 19".

Just tried 1280x960 on my RIVA TNT2 Model 54 Pro at work (Dell 4100). Looks worse. Went back to 1280x1024.

Personally i find 1600x1200 just right on 19".
However i have a buddy who runds 1280*1024 on a 17" and that strikes me as kinda small.

Given the choice, I use 1280x960. Unfortunately my stupid computer here at work doesn't offer that, so I'm stuck with either 1024x768 (yuck) or 1280x1024 (yuck, but less so than 1024x768).

Proper has nothing to do with it. I like 1280x1024 and run the desktop and games at that res. Love it! 1280x960 looks just plain awful. Anyway, in time the res. with be a thing of the past.
