Pet Ferret? Anyone have one?

As for price, they go for about $100 each around here. De-scented, vaccinated, and all..

We've had 2. First one had something seriously wrong with it and died within a week. The second one is cool. They do need lots of attention, however. And yes, they do smell a bit, but it's not very noticeable.

How do you de-scent them? It's funny how every single reply is about how much they smell then there are a couple of owners who swear everyone else is crazy and insist they don't smell. HAHAHAH

That's because the people who complain about the smell are those same people who don't take good care of their ferrets and don't clean the cage or litter box. The ferrets themselves don't smell much at all, it's the litter and the bedding they sleep in.

even de-scented, they still have that smell, just milder. My cousin has 2 and both are de-scented and you can smell it as soon as you walk in the house.

some people like the smell. They are a very high maintenance animal.

One last thing I would like to touch upon as exilera already did. Ferrets must have regular vet checkups. Its best to find a vet who specializes in ferrets not just your regular cat/dog clinic. Ferrets are prone to certain illnesses like adrenal gland disease that must be diagnosed early in order to save the ferrets health and/or life.

Or maybe it's just like owners of other kinds of pets also stop noticing the smell after awhile? Maybe some people are just more sensitive to the smell?

I have two ferrets, Sasha and The Other One. They're really fun to hang out with. They definitely crave attention and they love to dig. So if you have plants, be careful, because they will more than likely dig in them. Also, be prepared to ferret proof your house. Having ferrets is like having two year olds that never get older, they just always get into stuff. It isn't too big of a deal, like, just make sure you clean up after yourself and make sure that they don't spend time alone with your shoes. Otherwise you will have chewed up bottoms and a ferret that needs to go to the vet because of a clogged intestine. Also, they love to attract foreign bodies. Plastics, rubbers, anything on the ground that you or I would normally not consider eating, the usually will. They will carry off your pencils just so they can chew on the eraser.
I was going on vacation before, and my sister was going to look after my ferrets, so she took them to her place in Chicago because it was easier for her. When I came home she was telling me how they raided her pantry and hid all of her granola bars under her bed, they also took little plastic toys and hid them under the bed too. They have even hid my keys on me before. So, my best advice is, make sure you take your keys and wallet and put them in a place where the ferrets can't get otherwise you might need to go hunting for it in the morning.
Well, aside from all of that "negative" stuff about ferrets, I think you should get one. They are really awesome pets. Seriously. Like, they just do goofey things all the time, and they are really cute. People will say they smell, but you know what, if they don't like your ferrets then too bad. You don't need superficial people in your life.. right?

That may be partly true, but in general if you've had ferrets for a while, you'll know that the smell comes from their cage and not the actual animal. That said, if you keep the cage clean (i.e. wash the bedding once a week, wipe down the ladders and surfaces and change the litter box daily or every other day) you won't really notice a smell.

I had three ferrets, Styx, Dante and Madison. They would chase eachother around the bedroom endlessly. They'd wrestle and roll around with eachother. It's funny how they'll run backwards, kinda sideways, then hop up and down llike a rabbit and chase after you.

We currently have 3 and have had as many as 6 at one time. They sleep 20+ hours a day and make great pets if you keep your expectaions in line. PM me if you want to know more ....

I have always wanted a couple since I saw "The Beast Master" for the first time. But I live in an apartment and I don't really have the time. I have heard they are great pets and it's cool that some people here have confirmed it. I have also heard that skunks make really great pets as well. Supposedly they are really intelligent.

But I settled for a parakeet who is pretty darn funny. It wasn't hard at all to get him somewhat trained. He usually sits on my shoulder when I am playing xbox but sometimes I have get him off because he starts biting my earlobe. It tickles really bad, either that or he will keep messing with my necklace.

So you are saying all these people don't know how to properly care for their ferrets and/or they visit ferret owners who don't know how to care for them? That much of the population is that uneducated?

Sounds like they are pretty high maintenance. You can't really give them free reign like a cat - they have to be caged if you're not paying attention to them?
